Peeling paint on cracking plaster
Old rough lumber Rusty nails
A leaning steeple on a tin roof
God's Holy Spirit still prevails
Prayers of thanks Prayers for forgiveness
Tears of sorrow Joyfull tears
For my last three thousand sundays
For over fifty seven years
A dozer's come to take my church house
The younger elders took a vote
To build a brand new worship center
And just like that that's all she wrote
Here was my first time at the alter
There sat my momma with the choir
There stood my daddy at the pulpit
Here Jesus saved us from the fires
But I will still be spared this heartache
If my sweet Jesus comes today
Before the roll is called up yonder
Maybe I'll just fly away
