Thread: And the gates shall never be shut

And the gates shall never be shut

"And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it." - Revelation 21:25-26

Here we read that the gates of the New Jerusalem will never be shut, at least in part to allow people to enter the City. My first question is, what is the time frame in view here?

This is post Millennium, post Judgment.

So people can still be saved post-Judgment?

Absolutely not. There is nothing in that scripture that alludes to that possibility. No one will be mortal by that time and all unbelievers will have been judged and dispatched.

    Revelation 21:25-27
25 Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there. 26 And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city. 27 Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

The City is for the Redeemed and the Holy Creatures of heaven.

    Thanks for the response, Despereaux.

    Revelation 22:14-15 reads:

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

This text seems to suggest that the outside of the city walls is reserved for wickedness, does it not? Where are these people coming from who enter the City? Also, do you agree that the text implies that people enter the city at different times?

    Desperaux,

    Revelation 21:24 reads:

"....and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it."

Who are these kings of the Earth? Are they not the same kings mentioned in Revelation 17:2?

    No they are not.

I have no idea what you are getting at. The wicked are without the City because they are in the Lake of Fire.

Those who enter the city are the Redeemed, the Bride of Christ, made up of every born again person who ever lived, including the lowly all the way to the mighty.

The text does not imply that we enter the City at different times, but there will be a lot of coming and going forever.

My guess would be, in this context, Revelation 21:24, the kings of the earth would be the saints.

Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Throughout the Book of Revelation, both the nations and the kings of the earth are said to be the enemies of Christ (Revelation 6:15; 11:18; 14:8; 16:14; 17:2; 18:3; 18:9; 18:23; 19:15; 19:19). What reason to you have for asserting that John suddenly is referring to a different group of people in 21:24?

Where are they coming from and going to?

The saints have things to do! We are given authority in the universe and what we will do is not given to us yet. That is the wonder of heaven! As God will come and dwell with us here, we will have certain jobs to do--whatever is in God's mind for us.

We are kings and priests of the earth, especially in revelation 21, where Judgment has already taken place and the wicked and the mortal are no more.

I'd be interested in seeing what Scriptures you are basing this on.

As I noted, throughout the Book of Revelation, the referent of "kings of the earth" and "nations" is to unbelievers who drink from the cup of God's wrath. For John to suddenly shift referent without warning nor explanation would only cause confusion.
