Russia targets asteroid headed for Earth

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/eu_russia_asteroid_encounter

Revelation 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

Could this be a warning the end is near???

Nope. NASA said the chances of it hitting us is so high its nothing to worry about. For whatever reason Russia has other ideas though.

    From the article:

When the 270-meter (885-foot) asteroid was first discovered in 2004, astronomers estimated its chances of smashing into Earth in its first flyby, in 2029, at 1-in-37.

Further studies have ruled out the possibility of an impact in 2029, when the asteroid is expected to come no closer than 18,300 miles (29,450 kilometers) from Earth's surface, but they indicated a small possibility of a hit on subsequent encounters.

NASA had put the chances that Apophis could hit Earth in 2036 as 1-in-45,000. In October, after researchers recalculated the asteroid's path, the agency changed its estimate to 1-in-250,000.

NASA said another close encounter in 2068 will involve a 1-in-330,000 chance of impact.

Don Yeomans, who heads NASA's Near-Earth Object Program, said better calculations of Apophis' path in several years "will almost certainly remove any possibility of an Earth collision" in 2036.

"While Apophis is almost certainly not a problem, I am encouraged that the Russian science community is willing to study the various deflection options that would be available in the event of a future Earth threatening encounter by an asteroid," Yeomans said in an e-mail Wednesday.

This is something NASA and others realize that one day might happen and have tried to prepare for. But right now we aren't even remotely threatened by anything hitting the earth.

The news title makes it appear this is an immediate threat...but its certainly not. Sure wish they wouldn't title stuff like that. Just scared people for no reason.

    God bless

Whether this one hits earth or not we do not know. What we do know is that they have hit earth before and will do so again. Russia has good reason to think about it because of the big Siberia strike in the year 1908.

The verse you have quoted is undoubtedly speaking of asteroids and I believe the world will be destroyed (not just the surface) when it is subjected to multiple asteroid strikes, some of them very large. Here is an artist impression of one such impact. Your verse is speaking of many and there are other references too.

Actually the bible doesn't say the earth will be destroyed this way..it says this:

    2 Peter 3
    The Day of the Lord

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Russia is making a smart play. China is trying to be the next 'superpower' after Obama destroys the US, they have a good chance to do it. Russia does not need to actually do any more then intercept the rock, and they get the distinction of having 'saved planet earth'.

Pretty tough to top that one.

Seeing how low the odds are of this hitting earth, it looks to me like the Russians are just trying to look like heros over nothing. There should quit watching American movies.

Only problem its not going to come close enough to even hit though..

As I said before NASA and all the space agency around the world have realized many years ago that our planet could be hit and have made plans to do something about it. This isn't anything new at all. I watch the History channel off and on and really enjoy their universe show in which this has been covered and what NASA and others are doing about it. Of course all their 'How the Earth will End' shows also cover a giant asteroid hit among other things.

Yea I know they are in the article but there are quite a few...which ones are you talking about that look the same?

    These:
NASA had put the chances that Apophis could hit Earth in 2036 as 1-in-45,000. In October, after researchers recalculated the asteroid's path, the agency changed its estimate to 1-in-250,000.
Let me put the two above each other so you can see the difference.

    45,000
    250,000

first they thought the chances of us being hit was one in 45,000...in checking again they now say our chances of being hit are one in 250,000...in other words you have a greater chance winning the lottery then being hit by an asteroid. The higher the number the less chance of us being hit in other words..

    God bless

Yes, I understand that. The point is that Russia can take credit for the fact that it will not collide with earth. Even the fact that they are the ONES who are taking action is good PR, and gives them high ground in the worlds eyes.

Think about it, the world bought global warming, since it was a thread to the planet. Russia is making a smart move by countering this imaginary threat.

Is it not strange that the bible has stated that the world will one day end. and it is not believed, now the scientists are saying that the things God has warned us are are really going to happen, and there will be nothing we can do about it.

This earth is due to be destroyed by fire, scientific and biblical. The things that are being said is just as though they were reading the script from the bible.

    God bless you!
