    So anyone in the big freeze yet..or about to be?

    Northern Hemisphere embraced in deadly cold weather

    Severe cold weather has enveloped the northern half of the globe from the United States to Britain to China. Across the continents, many places are reporting record setting temperatures and lives have been lost due to the Arctic chill.

    The eastern half of the United States saw cold, Arctic air pulled down from the north plunging temperatures below freezing in normally mild places as far south as Florida. The widespread cold gripped most of the nation east of the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Seaboard.

    * Don't miss: Slideshow - Deadly cold grips the northern hemisphere

    Across the Midwest, temperatures plunged to well below freezing as parts of Iowa recorded temperatures as low as -15 degrees. Jeff Johnson, National Weather Service meteorologist, told the Des Moines Register, “"We're a solid 30 degrees below normal.” Minneapolis, Minnesota and Chicago, Illinois were seeing wind chills below 0 degrees Tuesday morning.

    In Miami, residents accustomed to short sleeve shirts and shorts bundled up as temperatures dropped to freezing. Further north in the state, Orlando saw a low temperature of 21 degrees.
    (more at the link plus slide show pictures of this too).

    It hasn't hit here yet..suppose to start tomorrow the last I heard. The day is suppose to start out normal..cold of course ..but then as this moves in temperatures will dropped. The high being only 10 degrees for Thursday...blah.

    Yesterday I went and bought me some thermal under clothes as we have already had some bitterly cold temperatures with the wind making the wind chills much lower and I am tired of shivering when I go out! But apparently the makers in Twain think we are badly disproportionationed with long long legs but very heavy set (for medium size pants) and super skinny for their medium tops... So now I have to take them back and get smalls for the pants and large for the shirt! How weird is that?

    Anyway I hope it helps! I am really dreading this. I have AWANA at church tomorrow night and my son goes to youth group..I am praying my car doesn't break down from this intense cold coming. You would think after living in Wyoming I could handle it but that was a long time ago and I was much younger then.

    So who else is in this deep freeze or about to be?

    God bless

    It's suppose to be a balmy 5 degrees Friday,and that's the high! I've been watching westerns in hope of all the movies made in Az. will heat my bones. I'm also going to make some of Mike's Chernobyl chili tommorow.There's a few brave souls out there that are brave enough to eat it. I call it creep chili sometimes,because the heat doesn't hit you until the second spoonful.

    I am not a winter person. Ugh! Enough already! The hills of Alabama are feeling it now and will be getting much more by the weekend. Temps at night around 5-10 degrees. How do the northern people stand it?!

    This is the only time of the year I make really hot chili. I use three kinds of peppers,jalopenos,serranos and habaneros. I lost a chili cook off in church one year to bean soup. My opnion,nobody from Wisconsin should be a chili judge.

    If it was forty here, people would be outside doing stuff thinking it was nice... Like getting down their Christmas lights. We did that yesterday. The high was suppose to be only 18 but it got up in the low 20's and no wind...so we got our lights down before the real cold comes in.

    You just get used to it. Though I don't live in the north..just saying that cause its been down right COLD here for a long time now..its the wind that is so brutal...

    Oh a tip for those not used to the cold..get a hat and a muffler...put the muffler over your nose and mouth when outside..it warms the air when you breath in and out so you are breathing warmer air instead of the cold air..it will help you stay warmer. Heat escapes through the top of our heads so wearing a hat help keep it in. I learned this trick when I lived in Wyoming where winter day time temps can be sub-zero on a daily basis.

    This kind of muffler:

    Not this kind:

    I think that would be a little difficult wrapping around your neck... and cold!

    I have a head scarf muffler thing..a hood that goes over my head with the muffler attached to it. Similar to this:

    Its the best buy I ever made! Had it for years. I can easily lift the muffler up to cover my nose and mouth to help keep me a little warmer. I asked my son the other day if eye balls could freeze though...wished I could cover my eyes but then I couldn't see where I was walking!

    God bless

    I wondered how long this thread would go before someone brought up global warming....even the weather man on CNN said every time they have a global warming conference we get terrible freezing temperatures...lol. But then he said globally temperatures are still higher then normal...but I don't really want this to turn into a debate on global warming though. Just right now surviving this terrible cold. Alot of people have died already.

    Oh and another tip. They said the best thing you can go for your cars in this weather is warm them up before driving them. Ball bearings are breaking due to the cold among other things. So warm up your cars! I have been letting mine warm up a good ten minutes before driving and the engine still shows its cold.. Will have to warm it up longer when this comes in.

    It's pretty cold here, for North Carolina. My method for beating cold temperatures looks something like this:

    The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
    In the ranks of death ye will find him;
    His father's sword he hath girded on,
    And his wild harp slung behind him;
    "Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
    "Tho' all the world betray thee,
    One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
    One faithful harp shall praise thee!

    lol...there you go! Or a ski mask..but then everyone thinks you are a robber so in some places that might not be such a good idea...

    Here, it is supposed to be 40 below zero windchill tomorrow along with a snowstorm again. As if we didn't get enough snow last week...
