    I fought a fire all night Saturday night in 12 degree weather. Fire trucks from neighboring departments realized their pumps were frozen solid when they arrived on the scene. Our hoses froze together. The run off froze in less than 10 feet from the fire. The plastic handles on our nozzles froze and broke off. We had icicles on our helmets. Needless to say it was COLD...

    I feel like going around like Clavi here in the house! My house is pretty good about holding the heat in. Had new windows and doors and siding put on last year, thank God, before all this hit us. We have been in the mid-20's for several days, and in the LOW double digits at night, like 12 or 13 degrees at night. Now, they are saying to expect significant snow on Thursday and Friday. THEN, even colder temperatures!

    Whew!

    We've already had 17 to 20 inches on top of the Smoky Mountains! They'll be having to drop food to some people by helicopter! Its been years since they've done that.
    Its COLD, people! We could use a little global warming around these hills in Tennessee....

    God's little angel, I just noticed your location, ARE YOU FOR REAL???!!!! And is that you Clavicula_Nox? or a good facsimile? I can remember ( with warm fuzzy feelings now) growing up on Bayou Teche in Louisiana, not owning a coat at all for winter.

    No, that is me in my half-finished half-bathroom.
    The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
    In the ranks of death ye will find him;
    His father's sword he hath girded on,
    And his wild harp slung behind him;
    "Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
    "Tho' all the world betray thee,
    One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
    One faithful harp shall praise thee!

    My, what piercing blue/hazel eyes you have. Is that hat/muffler the latest in camo in the middle east? Looks like it would do the job to stem the cold, tho'.

    Urban, may I ask what was the outcome for men and machinery? the barn? this has got to be pretty terrible if it is a rural area.

    The eyes are from consuming too much spice.

    The muffler is a keffiyeh and is a traditional Arab headdress. In the (distant) past, it served as a sort of tribal identifier similar to tartan, or something, but it was mostly used to protect the face from the elements. We use it for pretty much the same purpose. Sand storms, protecting the neck from rubbing too much against kevlar vests, cold, and etc. For me, the benefits are offset by my giant nose. It's not really camouflage, though.

    And what were you doing?

    My son says I look like a muslim when I have my muffler head covering on..though the colors are probably all wrong..a dark blue. I really don't care what people think cause I am just trying to stay warm!
    Friday the high is suppose to be only eight degrees with minus 4 degrees at night. I just hope my car and my furnace don't decide to break down from the cold.. They are saying the wind chill factors going to be sub-zero by quite a bit. Boy I dread this!

    Real cold??? I thought that was real cold.
    Nope..forty isn't even cold enough to snow...that isn't considered very cold around here. lol. You are just spoiled..

    That happens with our fire department here making it very difficult to fight any fires.. Hope everyone was ok ...

    The guys were all fine although most of us were in the first stages of hypothermia by the time we left. Once the trucks warmed up from running, they performed fine. We keep our bays at 55 degrees so ours was fine from the start. The barn is completely totaled (nothing but a few posts still standing). The owner lost all of his hay, a tractor, several implements, a hay trailer and of course the barn. I went by today and it is still burning. It will continue to burn for a week or so...

    CN,
    You kind of remind me of Leonardo D'Caprio in that picture.

    Here's some pictures from the end of the fire, long after the structure had collapsed. It was the first time we had available man power to take pictures. The pictures are not very good, but the poor photographer was shaking like a leaf because of the cold. Extra points if you can identify me...

    LOL!

    It's definitely cold here. I grew up in Buffalo NY, but spent about 5 years in Chesapeake VA. My tolerance for cold is not what it used to be and this second winter in New England is making me cry. I am so cold it hurts a lot of the time. My fiance thinks I'm joking... then he takes my hand and is shocked at how freezing cold they are. My issue though is the snow. It snowed a lot more in Buffalo, but they also properly took care of it. Here they barely plow (now they're saying most of the towns have already depleted their snow removal budgets... what!??! This is NEW ENGLAND. It snows here!), and they don't salt, they use sand, which is absolutely useless.

    And- for extra fun, my fiance and I share his car - a Saturn Ion. It has a GM Passlock system in it. This system turns the car off for 10 minutes if it thinks someone is stealing it. Guess what? When it's cold, it thinks we're trying to steal it. It sometimes takes 3-4 tries (30-40 minutes) to start the car. In 14 degree weather, sitting in a car that won't start is just... ugh.
