    Remembering Keith Green

The one Christian artist I admire most is Keith Green. His music carries a prophetic power to it that is unparalleled as far as I am concerned. I'm hoping we can share how the music of Keith Green has changed us by posting our favorite line of one of his songs and how it has impacted us.

"To obey is better than sacrifice. I want more than Sundays and Wednesday nights. And if you can't come to me every day, then don't bother coming at all."

I've always loved this line for its radical nature. Some people found and find it offensive and too black and white...but the message it brings across stirs a passion in me. God is not looking for religion, for songs, for our words or our money, He wants our life - every aspect of every single day. I wouldn't want to be married to my wife if she only gave me lip-service on Sunday and Wednesday nights...and I don't think God feels any different about us. He is a Jealous God, and this line reminds me of that in a powerful way.
Who have I in heaven but You oh God? Besides You, I desire nothing here on earth. My heart and my flesh may fail me, but God will be the strength of my heart and my portion forever...as for me, the nearness of God is my good - Psalm 73:25-26, 28a

I have to think about this.. he had so many wonderful songs. He was definately blessed with a gift! I had the privilege of seeing him perform at a local school many years ago. He is truly missed but his songs are still ministering today.

I will come back when I decide my favorite song/line.. there are so many.

I also love listening to Keith Green's songs. His version of the 23rd Psalm is the most anointed I've ever heard. (I've actually put a sound clip of it on one of the pages on my website). Another favorite of mine is 'Until that Final Day'.

Well, to be honest, I'm quite sure I've used the "ba-manna-bread" line more than any other, but I think probably his most striking line to me was, "How can you be so dead, when you've been so well fed?", from his "Asleep In The Light" off the No Compromise album.

I've often since reflected on how very, very much with which we modern Christians are blessed, how much we take for granted, and at what cost of responsibility we'll be held accountable for making the best use of what God has provided for us, especially in the "Bible belt" where I live and work. He quotes Matthew 25:40 on the jacket, and asks that we read vv. 31-46:
    The Final Judgment
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

The song title comes just prior to the line, in, "The world is sleeping in the dark that the church just can't fight 'cause it's asleep in the the light."

    Thumbs up

I'm sure that my whole life would waste away, except for grace, by which I'm saved.

But nothing lasts, except the grace of God, by which I stand, in Jesus.

I know that I would surely fall away, except for grace, by which I'm saved.

One of my favorite Keith Green songs is Make My Life A Prayer. Makes me cry.

Well I want thank you know
    For being patient with me
Oh it's so hard to see

This song "The Victor" is one of my favorites. Every time I hear it I want to jump up and shout Hallelujah!

    Swallowed into earth's dark womb
    Death has triumphed
    That's what they say
But try to hold Him in the tomb
    The Son of Life
    Rose on the third day

    Look!
    The gates of hell
    They're falling
    Crumbling from the inside out
    He's bursting through
    The walls with laughter (Hah!)
    Listen to the Angels shout

    It is finished
    He has done it
    Life conquered death
    Jesus Christ
    Has won it

His plan of battle fooled them all
They led Him off to prison to die
But as He entered Hades Hall
He broke those hellish chains with a cry

Just listen to those demons screaming
See Him bruise the serpent's head
    The prisoners of Hell
    He's redeeming (Oh!)
All the power of death is dead

    It is finished
    He has done it
    Life conquered death
    Jesus Christ
    Has won it

    Look!
The gates of hell they're falling
    Crumbling from the inside out
He's bursting through the walls with laughter (Hah!)
    Listen to the Angels shout
    (Listen, oh, listen)

    It is finished
    He has done it
    Life conquered death
    Jesus Christ
    Has won it
