Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”
__________
I wanted to share with you this morning an old favorite hymn of mine entitled “Moment by Moment”, written by Daniel W. Whittle, who was born in Chicoppe Falls, Massachusetts on November 22, 1840. Daniel Whittle was named after American politician Daniel Webster. He reached the rank of major in the American civil war, and for the rest of his life was known as “Major” Whittle. During the war, Whittle lost his right arm, and ended up in a prisoner of war camp. Recovering from his wounds in the hospital, he looked for something to read, and found a New Testament. Though its words resonated with him, he was still not ready to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. One night a hospital orderly woke him up and said a dying prisoner wanted someone to pray with him. Whittle was reluctant, but the orderly said, “But I thought you were a Christian; I’ve seen you reading your Bible.” After hearing that Whittle then agreed to go to dying prisoner. He recorded what took place at the dying youth’s bed side:
“I dropped on my knees and held the boy’s hand in mine. In a few broken words I confessed my sins and asked Christ to forgive me. I believed right there that He did forgive me. I then prayed earnestly for the boy. He became quiet and pressed my hand as I prayed and pleaded God’s promises. When I arose from my knees, he was dead. A look of peace had come over his troubled face, and I cannot but believe that God, who used him to bring me to the Savior, used me to lead him to trust Christ’s precious blood and find pardon. I hope to meet him in heaven”
After the war, Whittle became treasurer of the Elgin Watch Company in Chicago, Illinois. In less than 10 years, though, he entered the evangelism field. It was during this period, that he worked with musicians Phillip Bliss and James McGranahan. Daniel Whittle died on March 4, 1901 and is buried in Northfield, Massachusetts.

Daniel Whittle’s daughter May Moody (birth name Mary Whittle) also wrote music for some of his lyrics, one of which is “Moment by Moment”. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 20, 1870, and was the wife of William R. Moody (son of 19th Century evangelist Dwight Moody). Mary attended Dwight Moody’s Girl’s School in Northfield, Massachusetts; Oberlin College (1888-1889); and the Royal Academy of Music in London (1890-1891). A gifted singer, she assisted her father and Dwight Moody in their evangelism efforts. She died on August 20, 1963 and is buried in Northfield, Massachusetts. I sincerely trust you will enjoy this old hymn as much as I do. If you have Christ within your heart, my brethren He is with you moment by moment, as the hymn indicates. Enjoy this great hymn of the faith!
- Moment by Moment –
Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine;
Living with Jesus, a new life divine;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am Thine.
Refrain
Moment by moment I’m kept in His love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am Thine.
Never a trial that He is not there,
Never a burden that He doth not bear,
Never a sorrow that He doth not share,
Moment by moment, I’m under His care.
Refrain
Never a heartache, and never a groan,
Never a teardrop and never a moan;
Never a danger but there on the throne,
Moment by moment He thinks of His own.
Refrain
Never a weakness that He doth not feel,
Never a sickness that He cannot heal;
Moment by moment, in woe or in weal,
Jesus my Savior, abides with me still.
Refrain
