Thread: Most "dangerous" phrases or metaphors in the new testament due to misinterpretation?

Most "dangerous" phrases or metaphors in the new testament due to misinterpretation?

I was just wondering what you all think are the passages that are misinterpreted most to promote injustice and take advantage of people.

For example, pro slavery people might use

"Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh."

What others are there? I understand that the true meaning of what is being said by these passages does not promote injustice; they are just wrongly interpreted.

    ACTS 2:38

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

While I wholeheartedly would encourage every new believer to be baptized, I certainly would not suggest if they diidn't do so, they would not in fact be saved. I've seen those who interpret this verse to mean just that and they play on the fears of people who in return might begin questioning their salvation.

The only way to mis-interpret Acts 2:38 is to approach it with a pre-concieved mindset and conclusion. It says what it says, whether we like it or not.

I believe that the un-baptised SHOULD revisit the authenicity of their salvation. (Mark16:16)

    MOD NOTE:

Ok. Let's not turn this into another baptism thread please. We've had plenty of those and seldom, if ever, do they end well.

Do not quench the Spirit 1 Thess 5:19

Many Christians say they don't quench the Holy Spirit but they are in a church that has never experienced the Holy Spirit manifest. Maybe the doctrine of the church even says the Gifts of the Holy Spirit have ended.

If the Holy Spirit isn't allowed to manifest, then quenchin' is a happ'nin'.

Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

I think this is saying that its a sin to cheer for Indiana in the Superbowl.

Cults have been birthed form this scripture:

    Matthew 28:19 New International Version
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Which Jesus never said, what he did say was:

Matthew 28:19 (aramiac translation) King James Bible
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

It's a shame how something so beautiful was made so corrupt by men.

Mark 16:15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Snake handling... need I say more?

Never seen any of these churches spreading the Gospel at all... but they sure have a variety of snakes to handle.

I agree, but since someone immediately went on the offensive with it, I had to challenge it.

Wait a minute here. Acts 10:47 is being quoted all the time by the Hoy Ghost people. It doesn't look like the Spirit needed any human help for it to manifest itself in this appearance. Which is it?

It is dangerous to take any verse out of context or misinterpret or force an interpretation on the verse that is incorrect. The bible must be seen in the light of the whole bible. 1 Pet 1:20

I agree also, but some verses are so crystal clear, no interpretation is needed. Then it dangerous to take other scriptures to try to prove that the direct verses don't really mean what they say.

If I were to say to someone...please go to the store for a loaf of bread...how could they really mess it up? How many ways could that really interpreted?

    all the best...
