What does eggs,and a rabbit and candy have to do with Resurection Sunday? (Easter)

I have a problem with people and stores in general promoting Easter as a mythical holiday instead of what it really means. This argument was started by me during Christmas time a couple of years ago.I just believe that such rituals like Santa and The Easter Bunny should be allowed in church meetings.I don't even like the egg hunt.I know most churches don't do the Easter bunny thing,but a lot of do the Easter egg hunt.Is there a meaning between eggs and Christ's resurection? My wife told me a story about some guy doing a study and what everything means but I just don't see it.Has anybody heard this? My wife says I'm a hard case,but I believe what is written in the Bible,and nothing more should have to be explained.

...Many pagan roots, and other bad stuffage... thankfully we can call it what it IS "Resurrection Sunday" and snatch the victory from the deceiver and his peeps.

Let us not get so lost in what we are against that we forget what we are FOR...(and there IS something in the worlds celebration to be against)

I like the opportunity to talk about the power of that raised Christ from the grave!

No,not really.I guess if I had kids I'd probably do the same thing. I just want to know what the meaning of eggs and rabbits has to do with Easter. My wife tried to explain this reasoning over something she heard but I didn't see it. I done the same thing with football and the bible,but I done as a Men's program.I also said the same thing about green beer and St.Patrick's Day,which is a highly celebrated Christian holiday in Ireland.

On my way home from work today I had heard a program on the radio and he was explaining the difference between Easter and Passover, how the holiday we know as Easter came to be, eggs and rabbits, etc. I left work earlier than usual and I don't normally listen to this guy, so I don't know where he stands doctrine wise, but he sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

Easter is the name of a pagan goddess, called "oestre", which is where we get our word estrogen from. She was a Spring goddess of fertility, and was worshipped with egg rituals, amongst other things. Rabbits and hares particularly were associated with her because they get frisky this time of year. There's nothing Christian about Easter eggs etc. And sadly people (at least in this country) pay more attention to the chocolate than they do to the true message that Christ is risen.

I've heard "Easter" messages in this country that didn't even include the name of our Lord, they were too busy talking about the circle of life, death, rebirth, etc.

A lot of it has pagan roots, as does the name Easter itself - the pagan spring festival was largely about rebirth and fertility - as plants died for the winter so they apparently came back to life in the spring. Eggs are obviously symbols of birth, rabbits are symbols of fertility. Obviously that's a very simplified summary of how rabbits and eggs got involved.

That said I don't see a problem with giving and receiving chocolate eggs - the chocolate itself is harmless to us. It's also worth noting that Jesus didn't tell us to commemorate the anniversary of his birth or of his death and resurrection. He told us to take communion in remembrance of him but didn't specify when it was to be done, and he told us to be baptised. So as with so much else - given the absence of a compulsion or prohibition we can exchange eggs, or not, as we choose.

Egg hunts AND dressing up in our BEST Sunday best, going to church, coming home eating a BIG dinner with ham (or whatever your family's meal is), etc. are BOTH traditions not mentioned in the Bible. Why pick on egg hunts for the kiddies???
