    Handgun hunting,anybody ever done it?

I've got a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum I'd like to go deer and boar hunting with. I like the fact you have to get closer to game to take it down, unless you have like a .500 magnum or 45/70 and a scope. I also plan on getting a .357 magnum with a 4" barrel for a extra pre-caution.I got nothing against hunters who like to shoot far off,but I like the close up action.Of course it's easy to say that, because I never ran across a charging boar before .Any of you ever done any,or wanted to?

Check your state's laws concerning barrel lengths. In NC, it would be illegal to take a 4" .357 with you hunting for ANY reason, including for a coup de grace shot. In NC, ANY handgun you have in your possession MUST be at least 6" in length.

I would also not recommend taking a 4" .357 boar hunting because you are just likely to make a large pig mad at you...

A 4" .357 is legal here.I would rely on my Super Blackhawk for the put down shot, and would only use a .357 if it was just laying down and kicking, for the final shot if needed. The Super Blackhawk has a 7 1/2" barrel.

Why not just take a slingshot?

all I'm gonna say is you don't know how to hunt them "close". I have a friend here in Louisiana that does his gator acquisition in the water with his .40 cal. Goes jumping in after the damn things, and takes them from a position of taking them on an equal footing.

    Not at all.

    Handguns work underwater.

Don't try it with rifles, though.

My brother took out a razorback with a .357...after he hit it the 6th time starting at 30, 24, 19, 15, 9, 3, yards, with the last one right between the eyes, the blasted thing almost killed him when it fell on him.

He (my brother) won't do that again.

SOME handguns work underwater, but your kidneys are not too fond of the practice...

What kind of .357 was it and what ammo did he use? A .357 here is a minimum caliber you can use. Not really a good choice, but in self defense it will work.A .44 magnum has twice the power a
    .357 has.Hopefully your brother wasn't using .38 special loads.

I used to have a Super Blackhawk with a 10 1/2 inch barrel. I would take it hunting deer or boar any day. Of course with a barrel that length you have to allow some distance to shoot it. But the good thing about that is, it's hard to miss with a barrel that long. But I still prefer a rifle. The pistol is just for backup.

My brother wants one that size.I prefer the 7 1/2" barrel, plenty of length to go long, yet short enough for 25 yard shots.A rifle is always better, but for the excitement vaule, the handgun trumps it.

I hunt sometimes with a Contender in either .45-70 (16 inch ported), 30-30 (14 inch ported), or .357 Mag (10 inch). I happen to know that a Glock .40 will also kill a deer, but I am not sayin' how I know.
