    What makes you go deeper?

    So, we are talking about faith in Sunday School and our teacher (whom I adore) wants us this week to find scripture, words, songs, etc that has deepened our faith in Christ? I thought it just might be interesting to find out what all has encouraged you to move from the water's edge and deeper into your faith?

    Troubles, trials, tribulation and anguish.
    For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? ~ Deuteronomy 5:26

    What he said and I will add... that pushed us down to our knees and keeps us there in communication with God.

    Re: What makes you go deeper?

    I heard a pastor quote this on the Christian radio station once:

    I Walked A Mile With Pleasure

    I walked a mile with Pleasure,
    She chatted all the way;
    But left me none the wiser
    For all she had to say.

    I walked a mile with Sorrow,
    And ne'er a word said she;
    But, oh! The things I learned from her,
    When sorrow walked with me.

    Robert Browning Hamilton

    For some reason, us human beings don't listen or learn it seems, unless bad things happen to us...which is kind of sad actually, that it takes that, to seek God even more.

    God bless
    "People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; We drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; We drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated?" - D A Carson

    Re: What makes you go deeper?

    I don't think any of those things on their own has made a real difference. I believe any of those things in combination with personal experience makes all the difference. I'll give you an example...

    Genesis 4:7 - "If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

    Totally meaningless to me for the first quarter century of life. Well, not meaningless, but not filled to bursting with visceral feeling meaning either. I was a BasicallyGoodPerson™ and that verse was more for people who REALLY struggled. Then one day the consequences of a decade of unchecked sin up and bit me right in the face. Its as if I opened my door and... oh look what was crouching there ready to devour me.

    Today that verse speaks volumes. It is a decade of my life and uncounted hours of waste, an epic tale of broken hearts, crushed hopes, ripped hair and clothes, and liters of shed tears all boiled down and compacted into a single line of advice. A warning of the utmost importance.
