Can You Hate Someone and Be a True Christian? - Tim Conway

I love this video so much. It gives so much assurance to me and I'm sure to some others also. And it certainly gave me a better understanding of the scripture.

It touches on 1 John : whether we can hate a Christian brother and still be a Christian. Is this an immediate event ie regeneration or is it something we grow into ie sanctification.

Among verses talked on was John 3:14 : We know we have passsed from death to life, because we love our brothers. It also talks about what it means to 'hate'--and I think it may give some people a surprise as most of us will think of the 'emotional/feeling of hatred' here.

Yes, I believe we can hate someone and still be a Christian. Hate is just a sin like any other. Someone who has been saved will still sin. I'm not condoning hate, clearly God doesn't either. I'm just saying none of us is perfect. Having a sin in ones life does not mean they aren't a true Christian.

Daydream, do see the video. You will have a better understanding what it means. I can see that from your answer, you clearly have not seen this video yet. (your answer is a very normal answer and I would have given this answer myself have I not seen the video). How it is explained in the scriptures and in the video is not what you think it says from your explanation. I'm sure you will be blessed by it.

I will have to check this video out. I don't really hate anyone, but I am not a fan of people or the human race.
I'm astounded, bewildered, confused, baffled when people tell me there are 75 million people in America that are filled with the Holy Ghost and we're the most rotten nation on earth. "Leonard Ravenhill"

I can't watch the vid here from work.

Are these scriptures addressed in the vid?

1 John 2:10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother[a] abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

    The Outworking of Love

16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

    1 John 4:Obedience by Faith

20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can[b] he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

1 John 3:14 beautifully explained. Some of the other verses (hmm..not sure whether all your verses mentioned) yes. But the main thing to me is that I (and I suspect there will be quite a number also) thought that the scripture meant something else (and sometimes it does worry me some at least until now).

Edit to add : I plead not guilty if you don't like it. I just happen to like the video.

Yes, we can hate and be Christian. But if conviction does not arise out of that hate then I question if you are a Christian.

If your really a christian the hate thing will not be a big deal for you because it will soon fade away. But if you sin because of that hate the question would be "Are you really a christian?"

One could ask the exact same question of any other sin. If I sin because of lust am I really a Christian? If I sin because of greed am I really a Christian? If I sin because of envy am I really a Christian?

This answers the questions for me....
Why are you searching for love? Why are you still looking as if I'm not enough?

You didn't actually answer the question at all.

As well as discussing whether one can be a Christian if they sin due to hatred, what about the related question of whether one can be a Christian if they sin due to anything else?

We could quote Paul saying how the body is the temple of the Spirit, and therefore argue that anyone who sins against his body (be that through sexual sin or through general neglect of his body) sins against the temple of the Spirit and therefore cannot be a Christian.

My point isn't to say that hating our brother is a good thing, or even an acceptable thing in the eyes of God, merely to point out that it's easy to focus on one particular sin and ignore others.

The two commandments on which all else hinges are:
Love the Lord you God with all your heart and mind.
    Love your neighbor as yourself.

    I John 4;
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.

I haven't watched the video but this is the way I see it.

If you love God with all your heart and mind, you will seek Him and His will for you - which would be to keep the temple of your body unsullied.

If you love your neighbor as yourself, you will do him no harm. You won't steal from him, you won't covet what he possesses, you won't lie about him. As a matter of fact, you will help him when you know he is in need.

It is impossible for me to love God if I have disdain in my heart for a brother in the Lord. I may well disagree with him but I had better examine my feelings/theology very closely if I think I am "better" than he is, think my ideas are more precious to God than are his. Contempt is not cool.

Hate is such a strong word. I don't hate anyone. There are people who I may not be wild about being stuck in a lift with, but I don't hate anyone.

As to whether you can be a Christian and harbor hate in your heart... I just have to ask what is so special about this hate that you'd want to hang on to it? In the end hate harms the 'hater' far more than the 'hated'. Wanting to hold on to it would be about as appealing as wanting to hold on to a virus. I say give it to God and ask Him to resolve the matter within you. You can probably be a Christian and still hate someone, but just how effective a Christian I don't know. The Lord looks on the heart and I think it is far more pleasing to Him that with His help we keep our hearts free of things like hate, malice, resentment, etc...

I wouldn't feel 'right with God' if a sin (like hate or any other sin for that matter) was more important to me than seeking to do God's perfect will.
