    Being In This World But Not Of This World - To What Extent?

    To what extent are we to not be of this world?

    Can we watch popular television shows?
    Can we listen to popular music or only worship music?
    Can we read secular books?
    Can we "waste" our time on watching sports?

    Is our life strictly to be eat, sleep, work, and pray?
    God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. - Psalm 46:1-3

    Maybe it is helpful not to consider what is 'permissible' but what is profitable. A couple verses to look at;
    Philippians 4:8

    Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

    None of the things you list are necessarily in conflict with this.
    Micah 6:8

    He has shown you, O man, what is good;
    And what does the LORD require of you
    But to do justly,
    To love mercy,
    And to walk humbly with your God?

    This was a core belief of the Early Church, they were in the world but certainly not of it. They understood that to mean that the commands of Christ were first and foremost and anything that conflicted with those commands was off limits. For this reason the y would not go to the theater because the Roman theaters were for the most part what we would consider "R" rated at best. They would not go the the gladiator games or the chariot races, they would not participate in government or war either. they pretty much followed Jesus, they ministered to the poor, the naked, the widow, and the sick. They showed the love of God to their fellow man, they worked to support themselves and their families and any Christians who were not as well off.

    Garbage in, garbage out.
    We can wrap ourselves up in all kinds of 'do's and don'ts', or, we can simply 'seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness' and love God with ALL our heart, soul mind and strength, and our neighbor as much as ourselves'.
    We are faced every day with many choices. In practically every situation, you can choose to do it God's way, or your way. Seeking God's way in any matter is what 'seeking first the Kingdom of God' is about.
    It really all depends on what YOUR (the individual's) priorities are. God's kingdom, or yours? God's will, or yours? God's holiness, or your fleshly desires? What's more important to you?

    Occupations are worldly.
    Eating and sleeping is strictly for the flesh.

    Other than that you should be fine.
