    Games with real blood

    Try Mumblety peg sometime.

Reading a recent post reminded me of games we played as kids. (before computers, or game boys or WII, or Atari)

I'll list a few. See if you know how to play them without Googling

    Kick the can
    Red rover
    I spy
    Quakers meeting
    Hide the thimble
    Crack the whip
    King of the hill
    Follow the leader
    Scavenger hunt

I was like "before World War 2!?!?!"
Then I clued in. For a second there I thought you were exceptionally well aged.

    Yup, that too.

I can also tell you about steam engines, plowing with draft horses and crank telephones.
But that's worthy of another thread.

I grew up in the video game generation but we still played a lot of these games. Though I had the advantage of living in a neighborhood where parents kicked the kids out of the houses on sunny days. Computer technology at the time was also too heavy to lug around in your pocket. Only things on that list I don't know about are...

    Quakers meeting
    Hide the thimble
    Crack the whip

    What's involved in those?

He remembers stuff before the Revolutionary war...

    I know these...

    Kick the can
    Red rover
    I spy
    King of the hill
    Follow the leader
    Scavenger hunt

Quakers meeting begins with a person announcing, "Quakers meeting has begun, no more laughing, no more fun, no more talk from anyone.
Then you sit around, trying to make everyone else either talk or laugh. Last one in sober silence wins.

(Great way to keep the kids quiet during evening news.)

Hide the thimble is pretty mundane. Like hide and seek, everyone leaves the room while someone hides a thimble.
Great for little kids and to keep them from giving up, you can tell them they're getting warmer (closer to where the thimble is hid) or colder. Again, keeps the kids relatively quiet.

Crack the whip is one of those possible of drawing blood or even broken bones. The more kids the merrier (and dangerous)

Start off in a line, holding hands. The leader begins by running in a straight line and zigzagging to where someone either has to let go, (they're whipped) or they fall down. Either way you're out. Ever see a kid run head first into a tether ball pole?

I've seen to a few board meetings in small churches where the movie "They Shall see Blood" was filmed. They reenact it every year at the AGM.

Vacant lot football!!! No helmet, no pads. Flags are for girls.

It's even better if you have brothers on opposite teams.

When I was a kid my dad always told me about the "bull riding" he and his brothers did on his uncle's farm... except the bull were sheep. Sounded like a blast.
