What are your thoughts on the new planet discovered?

I just wanted to know what people thought about the new planet that was discovered. Apparently it is very much like earth and is capable of sustaining life there.

It doesn't really fit into any biblical topic, except maybe creation?

Got a link to a news article or anything?

I think the OP was about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_d

If so, that's quite a stretch for being "earth like". According to the wikipedia article they judge it almost exclusively by proximity to the sun.

My thoughts??? I'm very proud due to the fact that I discovered it.
If Satan can keep us busy swinging our swords at one another, there is no hope of a united attack on the kingdom of darkness. KJV, NIV, ESV or ABCDEFG; there is no time to bicker over such things. We'll devour each other if allowed to continue. We should grab the marching orders written in the way we best understand and get to work.

Wait, how does this make any sense?

It is the third planet discovered in the system and the fifth in order from the star.
How can it be the fifth planet in order from the star if they've only discovered three?

I believe it is supposed to say, "It was the third planet discovered"

Oh. That makes sense. Yeah, changing "is" to "was" does make it make sense.

You don't quite have your facts straight. All we know right now is the approximate mass of the planet, its location relative to the star, its orbital period, and its rotational period and all of this has been determined indirectly. The star is far too bright for us to be able to see anything else in that solar system directly, so we have to depend upon very intricate calculations that based upon the planet's gravitational interaction with the star. Now, what has been determined, is that this planet is in what is called the Goldilocks zone, where it is not too hot, it's not too cold, it's just right. This means that if this planet has an atmosphere similar to our's, and if it has water on its surface, that water will be a liquid, which is like the Holy Grail in looking for possible extra-terrestrial life. Everywhere on Earth that we have found water we have found life, so there is a chance that might hold true here too. If there were life there, though, odds are that it would not be an advanced society of sentient beings like our's is, it would be microscopic organisms.

The implications for this is that not very long after we have started finding extra-solar (our of our solar system) planets, and not very far (in astronomical terms) from us, we have found another planet in this Goldilocks zone. That means that there might be a lot more planets out there that are in this zone, and the more planets there are in this zone, the more chances of one having liquid water, and the more chances of planet having liquid water, the more chances of finding extra-terrestrial life (again, is anything is found, it would likely be microorganisms).

It is interesting to point out that if there was life that, rather than being dependent of liquid water, was dependent on liquid methane, or liquid ammonia, the Goldilocks zone for each of those would be different from that of water.

Xel already explained it to you, but I also just figured that I would point out there are 6 total planets around the sun.

    The Goldilocks Planet
Scientists discover a nearby planet that could support human life

It is also believed to have a rocky surface, gravity, and even an atmosphere. Sounds like our planet, right? These characteristics might seem normal to us Earthlings, but scientists have not found many planets that share similarities with Earth.

One key difference between Goldilocks and Earth is that Goldilocks is "tidally locked" to its sun. That means one side of the planet always faces its sun, making that side extremely hot. The other side of the planet is exposed only to the darkness of outer space, making that side extremely cold. So, only a thin portion on the border of the two halves might be suited for life.

Still, Steven Vogt, one of the scientists who discovered Goldilocks, thinks this space is enough. "I would say that the chances for life on this planet are 100 percent."

I don't get too excited about these 'discoveries' anymore because they never turn out like they first announce....here is another one back in January.

First Earth-Like Planet Spotted Outside Solar System Likely a Volcanic Wasteland

    ScienceDaily (Jan. 7, 2010)

The rocky planet CoRoT-7 b was discovered circling a star some 480 light years from Earth. It is, however, a forbidding place and unlikely to harbor life. That's because it is so close to its star that temperatures might be above 4,000 degrees F (2,200 C) on the surface lit by its star and as low as minus 350 F (minus 210 C) on its dark side.

While we do have some pretty strange little shrimp that live in the horribly hot waters in the ocean where volcano's are erupting...I still think its a long shot to even find anything like that on another planet. I personally don't know why they even want to try to find another planet like ours. I know the idea is so we 'aren't alone out here'...but we aren't alone! If they believed in God I don't think they would desire this so much.

    God bless

A new planned has been discovered by astronomers in the "habitable zone" called the Gliese 581G exoplanet.
New Earth-Like Goldilocks planet discovered by astronomers in alien solar system. The planet discovered is 20 light years from Earth with basic and essential conditions needed to support extraterrestrial life.

Earth-like exoplanets have been predicted for years by scientists in what is called the "habitable zone" around a star, but the identification and measurement of one has been called the beginning of a new era in the search for life beyond our galaxy.

"This is our first Goldilocks planet -- just the right size and the right distance from its sun," astronomer Paul Butler with the Carnegie Institution of Washington told The Washington Post. "A threshold has been crossed," he said.

The new exoplanet, called Gliese 581G, is quite close at 20 light years from Earth.

Because of its size and its distance from its sun, it is considered to be in its star's habitable zone.

Its distance from the star that it orbits means any water on the planet will be in liquid form, scientists say, and the planet is large enough to have the gravitational pull to hold an atmosphere around it.

The star Gliese 581 is now known to have six and perhaps seven planets orbiting it in circular paths and lined up by type in a way similar to our solar system.

"As we collect more data, we can see the system looks like our own -- with an inner clutch of rocky, terrestrial planets and then a big loner like Jupiter further out," Steven Vogt of the University of California at Santa Cruz said.

Really, it's only believed that it will have gravity? Whoever wrote that might want to proofread before publishing it next time as everything, even every one of us, have gravity.

You do realize that the situations for these two exo-planets is entirely different, right? What is the point of bringing this one up?

Because that last one they announced too as an earth like planet discovered and made big news too..until they got more information about it..

I guess I don't trust them much after they lied about life being found on Mars....or rather a fossil of life, which turned out to be nothing...again..

But at any rate, this new planet is locked in place..it doesn't rotate..so one side is burning up and the other side is freezing...which would happen to our planet if it stopped rotating. The chances of life on that planet are zero to none.

    God bless

Could you provide a link to where they said it was an Earth like planet? I don't remember hearing them ever come out saying that. If anyone did it was probably the media misconstruing the information.

Are you referencing something in particular (and at least relatively recent)?

Actually, around the sunset region it wouldn't be too bad, so it would definitely be possible for life to have formed there (again, this would be if it had water and that life would probably be microscopic). Would it be as ideal as our planet? No, but the big thing is that this has been found so soon and so close, not that it is 100% perfect.
