Harvard University wrongly taught that the Sun revolves around the Earth for the first 100 or so years of it's existence because of the same misguided type of use of the Bible. Galileo was excommunicated from the church for correctly saying that we go around the Sun. Which of you wants to argue the Bible as proof of that now. This is the same misuse of the Bible.
Jesus also said when questioned about life in heaven that we cannot even understand his teachings to live one day without sin , how could we possibly understand the ways of heaven. John 3:12

If you don't believe me when I tell you about things on earth, how will you believe me when I tell you about things in heaven?

If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you [of] heavenly things?

If I have told you earthly things, and you believe not, how shall you believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

We either found the Klingon Empire or the Vulcan Home World. What are your thoughts on the new planet discovered?
First, here is the definition of truth. The body of real things, events, and facts.
To make statements that there is no absolute truth in the universe(and I know you are not) is illogical. But tons of people believe there is no absolute truths in the universe. If somebody for example says, there is no absolute universal truth, then ask them are you sure about that? When they answer yes, tell them you just made an absolute statement. So they just admitted the existence of absolutes, even though they didn't even realize it.
Universal truth is only possible through a personal relationship with Christ, and since his Word mentions no life outside of earth, it's the "absolute" Universal truth. Christ is only the redeemer of planet earth according to scripture, not other planets in the universe. There aren't multiple Christs, redeeming multiple planets, in multiple galaxies, throughout the universe.
I'd guess I'm in some huge shared delusion, but of course, I don't see the bible saying that either so that must be wrong too.
Sorry, I've not read every post in this thread yet... but how is this a "new" planet? Surely God created it long before we discovered it... so how can it be "new"?
Please could everyone pray for Mieke and Charles.
My testimony http://bibleforums.org/forum/showthr...ight=testimony
It's new to us
As per the verse you quoted above, while it affirms that God created the earth (and everything in / upon it), it does not affirm that God created life on other planets, nor does it affirm that He didn't. Hence the only "'absolute' universal truth" that you could draw from the Bible is this: God created the earth and everything in / upon it. Frankly, we don't know what God has done with the hundreds of billions of other planets. I'd like to think there is other life out there, and what would interest me most is how they view God.
This is somewhat delayed, but Moonglow, I realized I never really answered you. You said something along the lines that you were going to stop listening to the news about this kind of stuff because they are always saying they have found an Earth-like planet. What you have to realize is what this means. This doesn't mean we have found another planet out there with trees and oceans of water, and sentient life, etc., it is just a descriptor. The astronomical objects that we know the most about exist within our own solar system, so when describing something we often refer to the objects within our solar system to aid in that description. The planet Earth is part of this. For this most recent discovery the planet was Earth-like because of the location it sits in, that Goldilocks zone. Another way planets can be Earth-like is in size, which is what some of the articles you posted were referencing. Some other ways extrasolar planets can be Earth-like is in density, planetary and atmospheric composition, etc. That is the reason you see things referenced as Earth-like. This is also why you hear many things being referenced as Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, etc.- like.
