Thread: Does God talk to us?

    Does God talk to us?

I saw a woman on TV the other day talking about her life and how she came to find God. She talked about one period in her life where God talked to her and told her to do something. I've heard many other people talking of similar experiences.

Does God really talk to people? If so, do you hear a voice, or does he just send a message through some sort of sign?

I've never received any messages from God and I was wondering why.

    Thanks everyone.

Depends, God talks to me though:

    1) Circumstances / "coincidences"
    2) Other people
    3) His Word / Spirit
    4) A 'voice', though not audible (very hard to explain)

So yes, God really talks to people.

I tend to be suspicious of people that say God spoke to them, most do it for attention or what have you..... saying that i have come across some powerful "near death experiences" like this one it changed the guys life and has been preaching since.

He is God and i believe can use all means.

I've heard God's voice. In one situation, I heard someone calling my name but I was completely alone. In another situation, His voice was not audible to the ear but definitely audible internally...hard to explain but that's how it was. I also experience communication on a "gut feeling" level or a...knowing... that comes from His Spirit communicating with mine.

There is also communication through His word, through music, through preaching, through words of wisdom/knowledge, dreams, and through prophecy.

    Hmm very cool!

I'm often suspicious of people who claim to have been spoken to by God. But that's not to say I'm suspicious of all people with such claims.

It doesn't bother me that God hasn't spoken to me. I was just curious as to why he hasn't.

Maybe he actually has but I totally missed it? Lol.

Yes God speaks to us. There is a type of prayer that you can learn called listening prayer. It is really just a way to learn how to be silent and still and wait and listen for God to speak. The book I read on it was The Art of Listening Prayer by Seth Barnes.

I have also experienced it when asking God questions sometimes he will bring Scripture to mind, or will "speak" to me in my head and heart, it is a little hard to explain, but it is like the two become connected and I hear and feel the words at the same time.

The way I found out about listening prayer was from my wife's old campus minister at a Wesley Foundation, he was very good at it. We went to meet with him and he spoke out things that he could not have known having just meet me for about 5 minutes before praying for me. He even spoke out things my wife did not know. He has been doing it for many years and has trained himself to listen to God very well.

But yes we can hear from God. He is a living God and wants very much to speak to us. If you enter into a time of prayer and quite your mind and ask the Holy Spirit to come and help you hear, ask a question (like God is there something you want to say to me, or how do you feel about me), and then sit still and listen God will most likely speak to you. It may not sound any different than the way that you usually hear yourself with the exception of a different feeling. If you are not sure ask God to speak to you in a way that you can understand.

I have always had a problem digesting things of that sort, even what I read in the OT prophetic writings, until I started to understand how Father uses His Holy Spirit in my own life to quicken me into Father's will for my life.

I'll try to explain this way, those OT prophets knew Father's spoke word recorded in scripture and handed down by oral traditions
    in their culture.
Now when I use the term "knew" Fathers spoke word recorded in scripture and handed down by oral traditions, , I mean they really knew it, as in totally memorized to where they could quote you a whole book just by referencing any two or three words they hear from that book.
OK, knowing that, I began to recognize in my own life that every season that passes in my life, more and more things make since to me in Father's written word now, coming from my growing knowledge of His written word, coming from my ever growing apatite for His written word.
I see know that my new desire to feed from Father's written word, that gives His Holy Spirit things in my reborn mind to use.
Use to answer new current questions I have, use to show me what is profitable or not profitable for me or my fellows, use to show me what is at the heart/cure of a problem I see or am experiencing.

Ok finally, the only way I have to describe that new experience of discernment or light in my life that was not in my life before.
In order for me to describe that to my fellows, the most expedient and accurate description is: God is speaking or spoke to me...
But, in actuality it is just the renewing of my mind... So I will have an ear and eyes for His voice, amen.

HONESTLY ! ...I am new to this being spoke to by God experience. But I do understand that expression now, am not afraid to communicate that experience as being spoke to by God now.

These examples best describes the methods Father's Holy Spirit uses to speak to me, uses to renew my mind,
uses to transform me into the likeness of Christ.

He speaks to me almost everyday now.
Well, I hear Him almost everyday now.
But, I am sure He is trying to speak to me every moment of everyday now...
I am just not quiet enough to hear or see His voice, amen.

    Father bless.

One of the few times this happened was when someone who knew nothing about my situation stopped and said "Your reward will be in Heaven". This happened while street evangelizing and at the time was worried it wasn't doing any good.

Another time was I felt I needed to extend my visit with my grandmother. I'm glad I did because the visit was pleasant and she died three months later.

Re: Does God talk to us?

Yes He does through the Spirit how ever:

And now I hope God can help me explain in an understandable way.

God is infinite Intelligence and Spirit, that's why He said I AM THAT I AM, this indicate an aware and Intelligent life, not form, capabale of making such a statement.

He also said, I AM THE ALPHA AND OMEGA nothing before or after, INFINITE, that would imply every thing else in existance must be with in or between the alpha AND omega.

We are the only other life form, thus far as we presently know, who is also capable of intelligently say, I AM, having that awareness.

Our intelligence and/or Spirit than, can only exist within or between the alpha and omega therefore, God's own Spirit and ours can only be one within another, inseprable, an individual Spirit within an infinite spirit.

If we pay attention to our everyday thoughts, while we are going on in our everyday life, we will be surprise as to how, suddently some thoughts enter our mind which are not thoughts at all but rather, a split second reasoning which would perhaps give un answer to some question or problem we may have had yesterday and, all of a sudden that thought beging a process in our mind with regard to the topic for which we needed an answer or solution and pronto, by reasoning a moment we get the answer or solution immediatelly.

That was the holy spirit doing his work, REMEMBER THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PART OF THE TRINITY, this is how some inventions or new discoveries are made, we of course, been so arrogant our selves think we have done it all alone and GOD, meanwhile, smile and say OK SON GOOD JOB, than roll on the floor laughing.

GOD also has a great sense of humor regardless how fearfull we silly children think HE is, He love to play with us little babies.

    MAY GOD BLESS US ALL.

Re: Does God talk to us?

    Thanks for your replied everyone.

To be honest I used to think the whole God talking to people thing was garbage. I was intrigued by the woman I saw talking on TV though.

I was talking to my girlfriend about this the other day, who also used to think it was garbage. I asked her if she thinks it's possible for people to hear God talking to them. She said that she used to think it didn't happen, but recently thought: "Who am I to say it's wrong? Who am I to say people don't hear God." I felt the exact same way! What if we're actually the ones who are wrong and are just closed off to hearing God talk to us. We had a great conversation about it and I told her what you guys have said in here. She also shared some things people have told her.

So thanks you guys, you've opened our minds!
