Why people use Jesus as a swear word.

I wrote what I think to be a decent explanation of why people use Jesus was a swear word, but was wondering if anyone can expand on, or critique what I've come up with. Any thoughts, as per the usual, I would greatly appreciate.

    An answer. -By Kevin (ilovemetal)

I had previously asked ‘why do people use ‘Jesus’ as a swear word? I now have somewhat of a coherent answer. But to get the answer we must first consider that Christianity might be true. For the sake of argument, let’s say it is. If Christianity is true, then, every man, whether he believes it or not has ‘God’s imprint’ in his heart. This is where the argument of moral value comes from in the case of Christians; they claim it is upon every mans heart, so that he can know what is right and what is wrong; the conscience. Now, for the sake of time, and because I don’t want to, I will avoid a 200 page paper on moral values. The point is, men ought to know what is right and what is wrong. In the book Human Universals by D. Brown he concludes that throughout history, in every culture there are things which they have found ‘right’ and ‘wrong’.

The name Jesus, according to Christianity is God’s name revealed to man. Thus, if Christianity is true, ever man will not only know in his heart that God exists, but that Jesus is His name. Not only that, if Christianity is true, then everything else is not true. So as it stands, we are left with two facts.

Fact 1) In his heart, every man knows God exists, even if he denies it.
Fact 2) Every man knows Jesus is God’s revealed name.

Thus when we examine the actual state of society from the standpoint that Christianity is true, we can understand why people use Jesus as a swear word, especially when they claim to have no belief in Him at all. Jesus even said in John 7:7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.” He knew the world would hate Him, and He also knew the world would hate His followers. 1 John 3:13 says “Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.” And from this we can see why people why people use Jesus as a cuss, because they hate Him. But again, does it seem strange to hate Santa, or Zeus? No one is saying these names in a serious offensive way because no one truly believes in them. Again I say, man knows Jesus is God whether he admits to it or not.

    I make the following comparison:

There is a man you wish to render unconscious because he is about to kill you, but he is frozen to where he stands by some strange coincidence of glue falling to the floor preventing him from moving. You run up to him and begin to flick his chest your hardest with your finger. But the man about to stab you is confused, and shakes his head. He raised his knife, and is about to strike when a brilliant idea comes to you. You reach in your pocket, grab your brass knuckles, and punch him in the side of the head your hardest. He falls to the ground like a rag doll and you have won.

Now, consider this. If a person is steaming with putrid rage and volatile hatred towards something, they’re going to go for the most devastating thing they can say or do to express their anger, and damage with the most extreme cause they can. In the case of a swearing Atheist, they often will conjure up Jesus Christ (among others) as a swear word to express their anger. But why? Why is it that they use a name to which they associate with a man who a) didn’t exist, or b) existed, but wasn’t God.

My conclusion is that all men, whether they acknowledge it or not know that Jesus is God, and by using His name in vain they know deep down that it is the brass knuckle to the face of God, and the only way which they can express something to the extent of being satisfied with their words. Thus, they know that in doing so they have offended the God of the universe, even though they deny Him, and there is a subtle morbid satisfaction in that for them. And, if Christianity isn't true, the question and implications are still valid.

I think so people say HIS name as a curse word just out of ignorance and habit.

When I was a teenager I did that until a Christian (a neighbor) knelt down in front of me with tears in her eyes begging me to stop. She asked me never to use that as a curse word again because it was her Savior and Lord's name I had used in such a disgusting way. She really witnessed in a kind sympathetic manner speaking very softly.

It worked. Praise the Lord.....and I became HIS.

I don't think is swearing if you get upset and say Good Lord or Jesus Christ or a combination of that sort .. as long as you dont add a bad word to it.

I'm not sure what you mean. What is a 'bad' word according to you? Are there 'bad' words?
Also, what do you make of this:

    Proverbs 30:9
Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

    Psalm 139:20
For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

    Deuteronomy 5:11
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
I ask because you seem to imply that if your angry (also a sin if not righteous) it's ok to say something like 'Good Lord' but not a 'bad' word, which you'll have to expand on.
    Thanks eh

I think there is more then one aspect to taking Lord's name in vain one of which is to claim you're a christian and not act it, or say something like by God i will do it .. while having not the slightest intention of doing it...whatever it is.

But if you get upset..shocked or frightened .. i would think its ok to call on his name.., but not in a casual sense, casual swearing is something we can do without.

By bad word i mean .. bad word Christ for example, and getting angry is not always wrong ..if you remember Jesus got angry when he saw people buying and selling at the temple and he threw them out.

Your right in a sense. You can misuse Jesus/God's name in a hypocritical way, but I think the Bible is clear about using it as a cuss word. And Jesus also addresses swearing.

    Matt 5
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

But that whole subject is for another time.
But if you get upset..shocked or frightened .. i would think its ok to call on his name.., but not in a casual sense, casual swearing is something we can do without.
I think we should always call on God's name to aide us, especially in such situations, but I again would have to say you'd be hard pressed to get away with saying 'oh Jesus' after being scared by a co-worker.

The point I wanted to make with you by asking to define a bad word is because I don't think there are actual 'bad' words in the sense that God is not looking down and listening to every word we say making sure to count the socially considered 'bad' ones as sin. You can say words which perhaps wouldn't offend anyone, but if you say it out of anger, I think that's what God is looking at. He's looking at your intent when using the word, and if your using a word to express a genuine vehement anger, then I would wager it's not good.

    Proverbs 16:2
All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.

    Matthew 12:34
For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Anyways, there are some good threads on this already if you search.
AS for anger, yes I put in brackets about righteous sin. Jesus did get angry, but he didn't sin in his anger.

    Ephesians 4:26
“In your anger do not sin”

Hope that's helpful. I realize it's not to explicit, but that's what I got for now.
    Yup.

The devil wants the name Jesus used as a swear word because He is the only God and Savior, and that is one of Satan's attacks on Him. Funny how we never hear the names Allah, Buddha, Confucius, or any others used as swear words. That in itself sets Jesus apart from all others.

Re: Why people use Jesus as a swear word.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered that "taking the Lords name in vain" may apply to those who call God, their Father who art in heaven, and yet not be His children at all? For God to be ones Father, they must have been born of Him. Even Jesus pointed this out to those pharisees who claimed God as their father, when He confronted them...
    KJV: John Chapter 8
[41] Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
[42] Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
[43] Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
[44] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Calling Him your Father, and not being born of Him, is truly, taking His name in vain!

    Why?

Lack of education and vocabulary sufficient to express complex or sophisticated thoughts or emotions.

In some Catholic circles, using "Sweet Mother of God" is a swear word, and Muslims swear in Allah's name too.

If someone would use my name as a swear word, I think I'd just laugh ...

    Really? Use your own name.

Not that I'd know how the Lord feels about that, so this is strictly my personal opinion.

Re: Why people use Jesus as a swear word.

There is something positive in that sometime negative practice. It is a reflection of who is the God of the USA. People living here can not tell the difference. If we go a nation whose god is Buddah, the people will use the name of Buddah in everything. Buddah this and Buddah that ... I saw that in India, where people in a household were continually saying Vishnu this and that. In Puerto Rico (I am from PR), no one says Jesus. They use two names to sware by and that tells me those two are their gods. They say: Ave Maria and Ea Diablo. For example: If someone hits a 500 feet homerun, they would say: Ea Diablo! Did you see that? Or Ave Maria que canto'e palo! In the USA they would say: Jesus! what a smack! When I became a Christian it took me 5 years to get rid of those two phrases, I was taught to sware by those two. It is written:

Jer 12:16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.

That verse above tells me God likes it when this nation swares by his Name, it means there is a lot of light and salt in this land.

Mic 4:5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.

You really need to be from another country to understand what I am talking about.

    Amen. Shalom

The fact that this nation swares by Jesus and many say Geeee! ... as an exclamation statement, speaks volumes about WHO is the god of this nation. When even an atheist, when he sees he is about to hit an 18 wheeler, seconds before he does he shouts: JESUS ! It is because it is engrained in the culture (provided by Christians around us). It is a good thing this nation does not sware by Buddah or Krishnna. I much rather live in a country that swares by Jesus than one that swares by Mohamed or Buddah. If you never lived in a non Christian country, you will not appreciate what we have here.

    Shalom
