    Gospel means “good news.” What makes the news “effective" is different depending on the one who hears the gospel (good news) message. However one happens to express the good news message, it is a message that is centered on Christ. Without Christ Jesus, there is no “good news” message at all. To put it most simply, because the Son of God was sent into the world to be born as a child, lived a sinless life even through temptation, died for the sin of the world, conquered death and rose again, we, who love and follow Him, can also have the hope of being raised from the dead to live eternally with Him, our God, and all of our loved ones who also love Him.

    Luke's gospel begins Jesus' public ministry with Him reading from the Book of Isaiah where it says,

    “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
    Because He has anointed Me
    To preach the gospel to the poor;
    He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
    To proclaim liberty to the captives
    And recovery of sight to the blind,
    To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
    To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” [Luke 4:18,19]

    It is effective because through it God is reaching out and saving a lost world. It becomes effective in an individual's life as they respond and yield to it. As Paul says,

    I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” [Romans 1:16,17]

    But look at the whole passage in Luke.

    It starts off with Jesus telling the Nazarenes stuff they wanted to hear. They liked him then. "Year of the Lord's Favor" and the passage of scripture was all about the coming Messiah. They all wanted to hear about that. They all spoke well of him when He talked about that.

    But when Jesus took on the role of the Prophet....and then told them about how they were not making God happy at all and how God had dealt with Israelites in the past when He was unhappy with them they were ready to kill Jesus.

    I believe that Christ's grace gospel message is sourced within the bible.

    I believe that Jesus Christ was a perfect man, born of a virgin, sinless, crucified and resurrected, and that He ascended above the heavens to return again. However, I don't understand how a perfect man can contain the totality of the Godhead.

    I believe that Jesus Christ will save the world from war, slavery, famine, plague, etc. when He sets up his millennial kingdom upon the earth. But I have a harder time understanding how individual regeneration is applied.

    The church which I'm currently attending says that faith by itself is insufficient to effect salvation, in that faith must also be couple with willful obedience (works). They believe in two steps, consisting of faith plus obedience (works).

    Ummm...let me introduce a voice of reason for some people that have their heads too full of theology to be clear any longer.

    Faith...it is the belief that something is true even if there is no tangible proof to go along with it.

    Works...something you do because you believe a fact to be true.

    Lets put it in real world terms.

    If you see a hot glowing stove eye, and a child reaches for it to touch the pretty red glowing thing you will smack his hand. If it is an induction stove the eye isn't really hot but you don't know that as you have never used an induction stove eye before.

    But your faith that the glowing meant that the stove eye was hot caused you to smack the child's hand away. (works) Your faith caused action be it right or wrong. The same can be said for those in your congregation.

    Yes, that is a good illustration. Thank you.

    We are saved BY grace FOR good works. We don't add works. We walk by faith. Works follow the believer. Let not your right hand know what your left hand is doing!
