Thread: How should I request Sunday off?

How should I request Sunday off?

We are in the busy season and a normal 40 hr job has turned into a 60+ week job. This means that they will work us like animals to get everything shipped. Me in the shipping office I am going crazy answering phones, filing, faxing, emailing, doing paperwork, using the computer, and doing all the other duties and responsibilities of a office worker. Sunday is a day of rest, and also a day that I use for certain activities. For one the singes group is having a ministry function meeting this sunday and I have volunteered, and also they are having a get together. These are to my advantage as at this group I am making contacts, building relationships, and this can lead to a better paying career. Contacts is 70% more successful at finding employment over applying on the web according to some sources, so I need to take these events seriously.

I very much want to get out of debt, but I am not gonna do it with my income. I also am finding little time these days to even interview due to my work schedule and the demand for me in that office. I had an employer contact me about an interview for a job paying $15/hr or something of the sort, but I was unable to go due to job demands. I am finding that its even hard getting a second job, as my current employer will demand all your time when they are busy. This makes it veyr difficult to get ahead.

So how should I approach this about sunday off? Since there will be no trucks, and the company we contract for is off weekends, my guess would be that the phones will not be going crazy, and the demand for my duties can be taken by the other office worker, who wants to work sunday. I cannot lie and call in sick but I do not want to work sunday.

    Thanks,

    John

Just tell them you are a Christian and you want Sundays off. Maybe first tell the boss what you told us:
"there will be no trucks, and the company we contract for is off weekends, my guess would be that the phones will not be going crazy, and the demand for my duties can be taken by the other office worker, who wants to work sunday."

Actually, when it is possible (and it sounds possible) employers tend to try to give you the religious days off.

I will do this no doubt. Lord willing it will work.

Be honest, tell the truth and take Sunday off with God's blessing.
    Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

He says everyone is working and I am not the only one not wanting to work sundays. Boss himself does not want to work it, but we need to act as a team.

    What should I do?

You should pray and ask the Lord what He would like you to do. I see you're viewing this thread so I am going to share a short story about what God did with my job. It'll just take a couple minutes.

I used to be a co-manager at a large chain retail bookstore. I was in charge of everything that had anything to do with book merchandising such as how displays were set up, books that were featured, and author signing events, literally everything about books. I enjoyed many aspects of my job, mostly interacting with the people who worked under me and the Christian literature section was my personal project. Still, some things about my job really tore into my Spirit and grieved me. Since this was a huge store, we had books on everything including sexuality, paganism, occult and anything negative or evil that could possibly be put in in writing. I'd sent many emails to the corporate office telling them that we will not have God's blessing as a company if we continue to sell pornography and books dealing with unholy subjects. I refused to feature, under great pressure, many books especially those involving pornography, sex and witchcraft. I gave my reasons over and over and they'd send someone else in the store to do these things behind my back when I wasn't there. I'd remove them when I returned to work. They didn't fire me for my disobedience because they could see that God was blessing my efforts and they were making money from me being there.
One day, God told me to quit. Not to give two weeks notice, not to explain my stance once more and give them any options but to simply and decisively quit and tell them exactly why. I hadn’t been looking for another job, nor did I have time. The economic climate where I live was the worst I’d ever seem, the unemployment rate was over 14%.
I quit that day in the middle of my shift just as God had commanded.
I was given the job that I now have had for over a year, making more money and working real 9-5 hours nine days later. I am firmly convinced that this happened because I heard from the Lord and obeyed Him. I was nervous and afraid. I didn’t have money to fall back on if I didn’t get another job soon. I would have been homeless in another couple weeks if the Lord hadn’t have given me my new job. He did it all. It was Him who provided for me.
As I said before, you should pray and ask Him if you should work Sunday or not. If he says work, then work. Trust in Him and you can’t go wrong. Things can get bad, worse and worse again but He will never leave us or forsake us. Those who trust in the Lord will never be put to shame.
    Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Andrew thanks for your story I was encouraged by it. I can think of a time I worked in a similar industry and produced many copies, and booklets, and literature for some christian cults and false religions. I hated their garbage and was helping deceive souls into the fire. But I had to do what I was told, so I did it, but I felt very bad abut working there. Eventually the Lord got me out of there as it was tough helping produce literature that is leading souls to an eternity without Christ. I was involved in this pagan sin, and feel bad.

And the Lord lead you out of there, my friend! You are no longer involved in what was grieving you by the grace and glory of our Almighty Father! Isn’t it awesome how He will lay down a straight path for us if only we trust in Him?

Andrew you sound allot like me. You can see the darkness and have the gift of discernment (a dying gift in the church of today). Are you an evangelist? You sound like one. An evangelist is different than a missionary. You would be a great street preacher. Do not listen to churches and pastors that think of street preaching as "ineffective." They have an opinion, but thats all it is. Open air preaching is all over the Bible, and something Jesus did on a regular basis (read the gospel of Mark).

You should get AIM, Yahoo Messenger, or Skype. I am not on this board all the time, so good way to make contact offline.

Is there a way you could request the hours you wish to spend at church and then go to work?
