The deal was signed by Vasily Vasiliev, vice rector of North-Eastern Federal University of the Sakha Republic, and controversial cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-Suk of South Korea's Sooam Biotech Research Foundation.
Hwang was a national hero until some of his research into creating human stem cells was found in 2006 to have been faked. But his work in creating Snuppy, the world's first cloned dog, in 2005, has been verified by experts.
Stem cell scientists are now setting their sights on the extinct woolly mammoth, after global warming thawed Siberia's permafrost and uncovered remains of the animal.
Sooam said it would launch research this year if the Russian university can ship the remains. The Beijing Genomics Institute will also take part in the project.
The South Korean foundation said it would transfer technology to the Russian university, which has already been involved in joint research with Japanese scientists to bring a mammoth back to life.

"The first and hardest mission is to restore mammoth cells," another Sooam researcher, Hwang In-Sung, told AFP. His colleagues would join Russian scientists in trying to find well-preserved tissue with an undamaged gene.
By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth's somatic cells, embryos with mammoth DNA could be produced and planted into elephant wombs for delivery, he said.
Sooam will use an Indian elephant for its somatic cell nucleus transfer. The somatic cells are body cells, such as those of internal organs, skin, bones and blood.
"This will be a really tough job, but we believe it is possible because our institute is good at cloning animals," Hwang In-Sung said.
South Korean experts have previously cloned animals including a cow, a cat, dogs, a pig and a wolf.
Last October Hwang Woo-Suk unveiled eight cloned coyotes in a project sponsored by a provincial government.

The move by the Egyptian parliament was a “natural” and “logical” response to “the crimes of the Zionist regime,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tuesday, according to the English-language Tehran Times.

  Saying publicly in the Knesset what he had only said privately to congressional leaders in Washington last week, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu stressed on Wednesday that Israel would act to defend itself even if the US objected.
  “Israel has never left its fate in the hands of others, not even in the hands of our best friends,” he said in a speech that focused on the Iranian threat and drew a direct line from Tehran to the events earlier this week in Gaza. He also blamed the 2005 disengagement from the Gaza Strip for leading to Iran’s establishment of a “forward” terrorist base there.
  
  Netanyahu cited legendary US secretary of state George Marshall as telling David Ben-Gurion in 1948 not to declare a state, and reminded the Knesset that US president Lyndon Johnson not only advised Israel against preemptive military action in 1967, but warned that “if you act alone, you will be alone.”
  Likewise, he said, former prime minister Menachem Begin knew when he decided to attack the Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981 that he was going against US wishes and would come under sharp international criticism.
  “But he fulfilled his obligation and acted,” said Netanyahu, possibly preparing the public for the prospect of Israeli military action even over US objections.

RR, wat baie mense nie weet van Israel se geskiendenis sedert 14 Mei 1948 nie is dat hulle al die geleentehede gehad het vir grondbesit, maar hulle het dit van die hand gewys. Die palstyne en arabiere wat daar bly het stemreg, verteenwoordigers in die parlement, beter kos en geriewe/huise as hulle eie broers en susters in hulle buurstate. Israel is so groot soos die Kruwer wildtuin, en as jy die Wesbank en Gaza bysit, dan is Israel veel kleiner as die wildtuin. As jy na die buurlande soos Jordanie, Sirie, Libanon, Egipte en Saudi Arabie kyk, dan is Israel so groot soos 'n koppiespelt se punt teenoor hulle, maar nogsteeds gun hulle die Jode nie hulle eie land nie!. Dit gaan egter verander na die Psalm 83 oorlog.

New law ‘tailor-made to free Selebi’



Jackie Selebi won’t have to be terminally ill to get medical parole, and Schabir Shaik may play golf with impunity.

The new medical parole laws are in force, and appear designed to benefit both these high-profile prisoners.

The law was passed a year ago but was not in operation until the commencement date of March 1 was set and signed two days before that by President Jacob Zuma and Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. It was released this week by the Government Printer.

The old law stated that prisoners “in the final phase of a terminal disease or condition” may be considered for medical parole, “to die a consolatory and dignified death”.

Now it has been broadened so that medical parole may be granted if the prisoner “is suffering from a terminal disease or condition or if such offender is rendered physically incapacitated as a result of injury, disease or illness so as to severely limit daily activity or inmate self-care”.

The rising mercury in thermometers across southern US states, on Friday March 2nd, was an ominous sign. As a warm humid wedge of air piled north from the Gulf of Mexico, triggering 28 highest temperature records across US states - from Arkansas and Alabama, to Georgia and Kentucky - the weather-watchers were worried. All the ingredients for a tornado super-outbreak were in place. And by dark on March 3rd, 36-hours later, more than 100 tornadoes had gouged a devastating trail across the American South and Midwest. Thirty-nine people were dead, and the US had suffered one of the deadliest opening salvos to its 'tornado season'.

The 2nd-3rd March 2012 tornado super-outbreak spawned at least eleven powerful EF3 tornadoes - with winds from 136 to 165mph - and one monster EF4 tornado. That bought 175mph winds, and total destruction, to four towns across Indiana. Twelve deaths were reported from Henrysville, Indiana, the highest death toll of the outbreak. A terrible human tragedy, to be sure, but one to ascribe to the awesome-but-random power of nature. Or is it?

In Sweden, cash is king no more



Sweden was the first European country to introduce bank notes in 1661. Now it's come farther than most on the path toward getting rid of them.
"I can't see why we should be printing bank notes at all anymore," says Bjoern Ulvaeus, former member of 1970's pop group ABBA, and a vocal proponent for a world without cash.
The contours of such a society are starting to take shape in this high-tech nation, frustrating those who prefer coins and bills over digital money.
In most Swedish cities, public buses don't accept cash; tickets are prepaid or purchased with a cell phone text message. A small but growing number of businesses only take cards, and some bank offices _ which make money on electronic transactions _ have stopped handling cash altogether.
"There are towns where it isn't at all possible anymore to enter a bank and use cash," complains Curt Persson, chairman of Sweden's National Pensioners' Organization.
He says that's a problem for elderly people in rural areas who don't have credit cards or don't know how to use them to withdraw cash.
The decline of cash is noticeable even in houses of worship, like the Carl Gustaf Church in Karlshamn, southern Sweden, where Vicar Johan Tyrberg recently installed a card reader to make it easier for worshippers to make offerings.
"People came up to me several times and said they didn't have cash but would still like to donate money," Tyrberg says.
Bills and coins represent only 3 percent of Sweden's economy, compared to an average of 9 percent in the eurozone and 7 percent in the U.S., according to the Bank for International Settlements, an umbrella organization for the world's central banks.
Three percent is still too much if you ask Ulvaeus. A cashless society may seem like an odd cause for someone who made a fortune on "Money, Money, Money" and other ABBA hits, but for Ulvaeus it's a matter of security.
After his son was robbed for the third time he started advocating a faster transition to a fully digital economy, if only to make life harder for thieves.
"If there were no cash, what would they do?" says Ulvaeus, 66.
The Swedish Bankers' Association says the shrinkage of the cash economy is already making an impact in crime statistics.
