JERUSALEM – An anti-tank missile fired from the Gaza Strip struck a school bus in southern Israel Thursday, wounding two people, one of them critically, and prompting fierce Israeli retaliation that killed five Palestinians.

Israel unleashed airstrikes and tank fire against Hamas targets across the border. It was the heaviest assault on the coastal territory since a broad military offensive two years ago. Besides the dead, more than 30 Palestinians were wounded, said Palestinian health official Adham Abu Salmiya.

New Zealand churches upset over hot cross buns 'like Jesus'
A pizza company has caused outrage in New Zealand with billboards advertising hot cross buns accompanied by the slogan: "For a limited time. A bit like Jesus."

"It's disrespectful to what a lot of people hold very dear," he said.

"They've dared here to take a clumsy poke at something that numbers of people hold sacred."

LONDON (Reuters) - A gene that makes bugs highly resistant to almost all known antibiotics has been found in bacteria in water supplies in New Delhi used by local people for drinking, washing and cooking, scientists said on Thursday.

The NDM 1 gene, which creates what some experts describe as "super superbugs", has spread to germs that cause cholera and dysentery, and is circulating freely in other bacteria in the Indian city capital of 14 million people, the researchers said.

Strongest aftershock since Japan tsunami kills 2

SENDAI, Japan – A strong aftershock ripped through northeastern Japan, killing two, injuring dozens and piling misery on a region still buried under the rubble of last month's devastating tsunami.

The quake late Thursday was the strongest tremor since the March 11 jumbo and did some damage, but it did not generate a tsunami and appeared to have spared the area's nuclear power plants. The Fukushima Dai-ichi complex — where workers have been frantically trying to cool overheated reactors since they lost cooling systems last month — reported no new abnormalities. Other facilities retained a connection to the grid or switched to diesel generators after the 7.1-magnitude quake knocked out power to much of the area.

Many people in the area have lived without water and electricity for nearly a month, and the latest tremor sunk more homes into blackness: In total, around 3.6 million households — about 60 percent of residents in the area — were dark Friday, said Souta Nozu, a spokesman for Tohoku Electric Power Co., which serves northern Japan.

Five conventional plants in the area were out, and it was not clear when power would be restored, he said.

April 8 (Bloomberg) -- Blockbuster Inc. received approval yesterday from the bankruptcy judge to sell the assets to Dish Network Corp., the winner of this week's auction. The contract with Englewood, Colorado-based Dish has a gross value of $320 million.

A lawyer for Blockbuster said at the hearing yesterday that the Dish purchase will have $178.8 million for senior secured lenders, $20 million for administrative claims, plus the assumption of $11.5 million owing to movie studios.

We ask Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice to respect the will of the people of the only functioning Democracy in the Middle East. Given the 95% number there is no debate as to where they stand.

But in case there are questions, let us make these points. The Prime Minister of Israel does not have the political power to impose a division of Jerusalem (should he want to) when 95% of his people oppose it.

The poll also showed that 78% of Likud voters oppose the creation of a Palestinian State.

Oil above $112 amid Mideast turmoil, weak dollar

SINGAPORE – Oil prices fell slightly to above $112 a barrel Monday in Asia as traders eyed fresh Middle East tension and a wobbly U.S. dollar.

Benchmark crude for May delivery was down 42 cents at $112.37 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Friday, the contract jumped $2.49 to $112.79, the highest since September 2008.
