During the Ten Days of Repentance, the period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, thousands of Jews traditionally visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem for Selichot (penitential prayers).

A special prayer service was at the Wall held this week, advertised in posters throughout the city of Jerusalem, attended by people from all over the country. It was led by the Rabbi of the city of Tzfat, Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, the son of the late Sephardic Chief Rabbi, Rav Mordechai Eliyahu.

The sound of the shofar was not heard during this particular service; rather, Rav Eliyahu asked the participants to cry out together to G-d instead because of the many difficulties besetting the Jewish people and the state of Israel at the start of this new year.

Israel Gets Ready for Yom Kippur



Soldiers, police, paramedics, rabbis and ordinary Israelis are each doing their part to prepare for the holiest day of the Jewish year.

Israel is spending Friday preparing for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. The holiday will begin at 4:41 p.m. in Jerusalem.

Police have upped their alert across the country, particularly near synagogues, which are expected to be crowded beginning on Friday evening. Paramedics are on alert as well, and are prepared to deal with any emergencies that may come up during the day.

The IDF has imposed a closure on Judea and Samaria, due to PA terrorists’ tendency to time their attacks to coincide with holidays. During the closure PA Arabs will be able to travel freely within PA-controlled areas, but will be able to enter Israeli areas only in cases of humanitarian necessity.

Sarkozy: Jewish State a 'Silly' Idea



French president Nicolas Sarkozy squarely blames Israel for stalled talks and says the Jewish state's national identity is "silly."

According to the oft-controversial French magazine Le Canard Enchaîne, President Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the idea of a Jewish state is "silly."

"It is silly to talk about a Jewish state," Sarkozy said in reference to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's assertion no true peace could be made until officials in Ramallah accepted Israel's essential Jewish identity.

"It would be like saying that this table is Catholic," he added. "There are two million Arabs in Israel."

Drought-hit Pacific island nation down to last few days of water



WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A drought-stricken Pacific island nation is down to its last few days of water, prompting a mercy dash by New Zealand and Australia with water-making equipment.
Tuvalu, the world's fourth-smallest nation sitting just below the Equator, has declared a state of emergency and is rationing water.
Tuvalu has a collective land mass of just 25 sq km (10 square miles) with its highest point five metres above sea level and is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change and rising oceans.
Air force planes from New Zealand and Australia were combining on Friday to move a large desalination plant to Tuvalu, a group of small islands around 3,180 km northeast of New Zealand.
"The advice is that more capacity is needed to relieve the acute water shortage and replenish stocks," said New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully in a statement.

Following the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs, fans held an iPhone lit vigil at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California where flags flew at half mast and bagpipes played "Amazing Grace" in honour of the legacy left behind by Jobs.

Businessweek reports that mourners flocked to Apple headquarters and various Apple stores around the world to honour Steve Jobs who passed away on Wednesday after an eight year battle with pancreatic cancer. From California to Hong Kong, and all points in between, fans of Apple honored Steve Jobs for making Apple what it is today and changing how people work and play around the world.

At the Apple store in San Francisco at Mission Dolores Park, an iPhone vigil was held by those who admired Steve Jobs and his visions within the technology industry and beyond. As Businessweek reports, Christopher Smith, a former business development manager in San Francisco, admitted that he took part in the vigil out of respect for the work of Steve Jobs with Apple in changing the world. "I came out to honor the fact that one man with vision, courage and unwavering dedication can still change the world," said Smith. "The way that I communicate and the way that I interact with the world is through things that Steve Jobs has created."

In addition to the millions of ordinary people who paid their respect to Steve Jobs, mourners also included the powerful and elite, from President Obama and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, who wrote, "The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had," said the Microsoft founder, "the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, its been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely."

Israel ready to strike Syria, Lebanon, Gaza



Israeli officials have reportedly warned Syrian dictator Bashar Assad that if he uses the downfall of his regime as an excuse to launch missiles at Tel Aviv, Israel will respond with a massive assault against Syria, Lebanon and Gaza.

Unnamed Israeli government sources told News First Class that the threat was relayed to Assad via European intelligence agencies.

The Israeli counter-threat came just days after Iran's Fars news agency quoted Assad telling Turkey's foreign minister that he would launch hundreds of ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv if the West interferes in his violent crackdown on pro-democracy protestors in Syria.

"If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I will need not more than six hours to transfer hundreds of rockets and missiles to the Golan Heights to fire them at Tel Aviv," Assad reportedly said.

Israel's threat included Lebanon and Gaza because Assad is said to have boasted that his own missile barrage on Tel Aviv would be complemented by Hizballah and Hamas attacks on Israel.

Volcanic Alert In Effect On El Hierro As 4.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits



A 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck El Hierro, the smallest of The Canary Islands, late on Saturday night. It was the strongest earthquake to be recorded on the Spanish island since an unprecedented earthquake swarm commenced during the summer.

The Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN) has reported an increase in the intensity of earthquakes recorded on El Hierro, the smallest of The Canary Islands, during the last 48 hours. The number of earthquakes recorded since July 17 , 2011 on El Hierro has now reached 10,000, figures from the IGN confirm.


The IGN also confirmed surface deformations exceeding 35mm on the 280-sqkm island, where residents have been put on alert for a possible volcanic eruption. However, seismologists have moved to reassure the local population that a volcanic eruption is not imminent.

The agency confirmed on Friday that 886 earthquakes, most of them located in the sea to the SW of the island, have been recorded in the 7 days since 02 October, 2011. During this period, 71 earthquakes were felt by the island’s estimated 10,000 residents.

Nearly 700,000 attend gay pride parade in Rio



RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Authorities in Brazil say nearly 700,000 people have celebrated in a gay pride parade at Copacabana beach

Many participants waved rainbow flags and wore lavish Carnival costumes as loud music blasted from more than 15 sound trucks in Sunday's festivities.

Gay men, lesbians and cross-dressers danced and cheered to demands that Brazil enact more laws against homophobia in Latin America's biggest nation.

Organizers had hoped for nearly 1.5 million people at the 16th annual parade, but Rio de Janeiro police tell the newspaper the O Globo and other local media that about 700,000 were present.

Homosexuality Gaining Wider Acceptance in the U.S.

MONDAY, Oct. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Younger generations are leading the way toward greater tolerance and social acceptance of gays and lesbians in the United States, according to new research.

While the nation remains deeply divided on gay marriage, the vast majority of Americans support basic civil liberties and freedom of expression for homosexual people.

This wasn't always the case. In 1973, 70 percent of Americans felt homosexuality was "always wrong," the report revealed. By 2010, the percentage of those who felt that homosexuality was "always wrong" had dropped to 44 percent.

The findings show a clear "trend toward greater tolerance regarding homosexuality," said Tom W. Smith, director of the General Social Survey at NORC and author of the NORC report, in news release last week.

The researchers found a dramatic increase in support for same-sex marriage over the last 20 years, jumping from an 11 percent approval rate in 1988 to 46 percent in 2010. Meanwhile, 40 percent remain opposed.

Vladimir Putin's plan to create a Eurasian Union is about reclaiming the Russian Empire



Vladimir Putin is on a roll. Last month, he revealed he was all set to return to the Russian presidency next year, possibly for as long as twelve years.

And on Tuesday, he disclosed he was in the process of creating a new global power bloc, the ‘Eurasian Union,’ on the bones of what used to be the Soviet Union.
His dream would see Russia again dominating about one fifth of the earth’s surface with an internal market of almost 300 million people.

The new union would include authoritarian Kazakhstan and Belarus to begin with before expanding to take in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and then, Mr Putin hopes, other former Soviet republics. Mr Putin did not say so but it is known that he would dearly like to see Ukraine sign up to his master plan.

His is a bold idea and one that immediately and unsurprisingly drew admiration from Russian nationalists. Older Russians, who hark after the paternalism and stability of the defunct Soviet Union, are also likely to appreciate the plan. Mr Putin was at pains to say however that his mission was not to recreate the Soviet Union.

That though is somewhat misleading.

Floods kill hundreds in Southeast Asia



BANGKOK — Massive floods have left 500 people dead across Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, officials said Monday, as authorities stepped up efforts to reach victims of the unusually heavy monsoon rains.

In Thailand, where the death toll from the country's worst floods in decades rose to 269, thousands of soldiers fanned out across affected areas as part of a huge aid operation.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who has described the situation as a "serious crisis," said the kingdom had two days before the arrival of the next tropical depression, but insisted the situation was under control.

"It is not necessary to announce disaster zones because we still can handle it," she told reporters, a day after postponing official visits to Singapore and Malaysia to stay and monitor the authorities' response.

Hurricane Jova speeds up near Mexico's Pacific coast



(Reuters) - Hurricane Jova gained speed on Monday as it headed for one of Mexico's busiest cargo ports and popular tourist resorts along the country's beach-lined Pacific coast.

The storm, with top winds reaching 125 miles per hour, was about 220 miles southwest of the port city of Manzanillo at 1800 GMT, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

According to the center's projections, Jova is expected to make landfall late on Tuesday northwest of Manzanillo near the laid-back resort towns of Melaque and Barra de Navidad, on a stretch of coast dotted with fine beaches.

Already a category three hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity, the center said Jova could strengthen by one rung later on Monday or early Tuesday. It was moving very slowly at just 6 mph, increasing the chance of severe damage once it makes landfall.
