    Least faithful state.... competition between Vermont and Wisconsin.

    Least faithful state.... completion between Vermont and Wisconsin.

    I just heard on the radio that there is a sad competition between these two states to be the least 'faithful' of the 50 US states.

    According to Garrison Keeler on the writers almanac a few moments ago, both states populaces have 50% who report 'yes' when answering the question "Do you believe in God?"

    Of course we know that;

    Psalm 14:1

    The fool has said in his heart,
    There is no God.

    They are corrupt,
    They have done abominable works,
    There is none who does good.

    Why do you suppose that these states are vying for such a
    distinction? What about them might cause this particular
    crisis of faith?

    I am assuming "completion" should be "competition".

    As far as your psalm, I understand that refers to a "practical atheism" i.e. someone who professes to believe in God, yet their actions do not demonstrate any type of fear or respect of the Lord. It is spoken to outwardly religious folk.
    It is only the cynic who claims “to speak the truth” at all times and in all places to all men in the same way, but who, in fact, displays nothing but a lifeless image of the truth… He dons the halo of the fanatical devotee of truth who can make no allowance for human weaknesses; but, in fact, he is destroying the living truth between men. He wounds shame, desecrates mystery, breaks confidence, betrays the community in which he lives, and laughs arrogantly at the devastation he has wrought and at the human weakness which “cannot bear the truth”. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in Ethics.

    And yet nearly 100% of Saudi Arabia believes in God.

    And yet Mormon Utah is the most religious state in the union.

    And yet the nation of Israel was judged as wicked even as their temples were packed and their teachers well-learned.

    Seriously, what is the point of this thread? How can we measure love for God? How can statistics see into the souls of mankind? How does responding to a survey indicate salvation?

    If I were to look at the US from an outsider's perspective, I would think that "religiosity" makes you a terrible state.

    Who cares how many people claim to believe in God, when so many have their own ideas of what "God" is and may or may not actually worship that God.

    Jas 2:19 NKJV You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
    1Jn 4:1 NKJV Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

    1Th 5:21-22 NKJV Test all things; hold fast what is good. (22) Abstain from every form of evil.

    Decrumpit wins the thread.

    It seemed to me that it was an interesting that less then 50% of people surveyed would report that they even believed. I am not sure why it would not surprise anyone who believes that Psalm 19 is more then fancy words....

    That 'populist atheism' is in fashion is certainly no surprise... but the numbers in
    the polls in these states seem to show something more then a populist movement
    (to me at least).

    I thought that Wisconsin and Vermont only had cheddar cheese in common.

    Also the letters 'o' and 'n'.

    Here is the transcript of where I heard it (it was New Hampshire not Wisconsin).

    Here is what I heard;

    ....But beginning in 1992, Vermont has voted Democrat in every presidential election. It was the only state in America that George W. Bush did not visit during his two terms as president. It became the first state to allow and recognize civil unions between same-sex partners in 2000, and was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage legislatively (Massachusetts was the very first state to legalize same-sex marriage in 2004, but it was through a court ruling).

    It vies with New Hampshire for being the least religious state in the union. Only half of Vermonters say they believe in God, compared with about 70 percent of the rest of the nation. People there attend weekly services at a much lower rate than other Americans, and a much smaller percentage say that religion is important to them. There are, however, a disproportionately high number of American converts to Buddhism living in Vermont, and there are several Buddhist retreat centers through out the state.
    Not sure where Garrison got the numbers from, here is a break down of church attendance (hardly the same thing, but interesting none the less)....
