Is jucheck.exe a virus or not?

My son keeps getting this pop up message on his laptop from a program by this name saying it wants to make some changes to his computer and its from an unknown publisher so of course he clicks no. So I did a search online and some places are saying this is just a Java update thing while others say its a trojan...how do I find out if its ok or not? He has windows 6.

    Thanks

Re: Is jucheck.exe a virus or not?

Windows 6 or did you mean 7?

jucheck.exe stands for "Java Update Check". It makes an icon for this program on the taskbar next to the clock. The easiest way is to locate the actual file (on windows 7 it should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Java\Java Update) then right click it and scan it with your AV software.

If he dos not have Java installed it would be a virus ... although most people do have Java installed ... in which case it would probably be legit and he should allow it to download and install the latest version of Java.

Windows 7...sorry. Yes he has Java...the icon will change to a light orange color when it needed to update. It actually came up while I was doing other things on his computer and said it had updates available...so I clicked on it and that pop up window for jucheck.exe came on. So this time I clicked allow and it appeared to start to do updates but then another little window came up saying their was an error and it couldn't finish. So I think tomorrow I will get on his computer and go to Java website and download it from there.

I think this update has been trying to do this for awhile and he didn't know what it was...and kept saying no to it. So I will see if that gets things straightened out. He also have his Java icon hidden along with some others so doesn't see the icon change colors when they need updating. I will change the setting on that so they aren't hidden and explain to him to what to watch for.

    God bless
