Do you have a router you connect to in order to connect to the internet?

    Re: Error Message?

I am not sure what I have, just got reconnected and it runs through 'cable'? as opposed to the telephone looking DSL line. I am not sure about the whole security thing with this because even when my computer is off, this thing (little box) is on, I left the power on to the box but unplugged the internet line, I am wondering if that caused the message. I didn't think about that at first.

I am just concerned about having the internet on all the time and the security risk?

Your computer and Router are probably on the same IP address. If so, you need to figure out what the IP of the router is (probably 192.168.0.1) and set your computer to "obtain IP address automatically" as well as set the "default gateway" and "default DNS server" to the router IP

Also, since you changed from DSL to a different provider, I think your pc is recognizing its own IP twice. Something to that effect...

Do you have Vista Service Pack Two? The service pack was supposed to solve this issue. (Windows update) Since you've been offline for quite awhile, I would suggest you download and install all the updates available.

Otherwise, there is a patch that was meant for this issue: (A vista specific problem, it appears).
