    Question Are you a priest?

    Are you a priest?

    Yes, or no.
If yes, what does that mean?
    Scripture please.

    Here is where I am coming from;

    1 Peter 2:5

    New King James Version (NKJV)

5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

No, this thread has NOTHING to do with the Roman Catholic Church.

    Re: Are you a priest?

    Yes;

1 Peter 2:9 But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
If Satan can keep us busy swinging our swords at one another, there is no hope of a united attack on the kingdom of darkness. KJV, NIV, ESV or ABCDEFG; there is no time to bicker over such things. We'll devour each other if allowed to continue. We should grab the marching orders written in the way we best understand and get to work.

    Re: Are you a priest?

    Yest

This is from another thread, since you and TMS already hogged the best verses!

But I think it meas we are in service to our High Priest, and within that we are servants to who ever He sends us to. To help, encourage, support, intercede, teach, and so on. We are servants to the Most High called to serve, following in the steps of our Lords earthly life here, just as He came lowly and to serve.

In Christ each one is called to a royal priest hood. We are called to be separated out.
I know Christ is not of the order of Aaron, which would mean that as those in Christ we neither are of the Aaronic or Levitical priesthood orders. I think there is still much we can learn from the earthly holy service that can help us better comprehend the spiritual holy service, both of which are done before God

A new priesthood with our High Priest Jesus, of the order of Melchizedek, we also are therefore of a different order but not high priest, as that is Jesus. And it is a calling outside of the priesthood established by the Mosaic Law. So in that respect we are no longer under the Law, but at the same time called to a higher calling of sinlessness, and by that I mean, Jesus said if you "lust" in your heart, you have just as much committed sin.

So, just as food for thought, good pondering material, and not to try and read anything in that is not there, just good pondering material of what was the shadow of what was to come, there are some interesting things to ponder on in regards to the Levites when we consider our High Priest, and the order of the Priesthood, though not Levitical, we are called to.

Numbers 3:6 "Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him. 7 And they shall attend to his needs and the needs of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of meeting, to do the work of the tabernacle. (Num 16:9)

Numbers 8:14Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine. 15 After that the Levites shall go in to service the tabernacle of meeting. So you shall cleanse them and offer them like a wave offering.

1 Chronicles 9:33 These are the singers, heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites, who lodged in the chambers, and were free from other duties; for they were employed in that work day and night.

Deuteronomy 10:9 Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God promised him.)(Deu 12:12; 18:1)

My point being that we are not citizens of the world, and we are separated out, to serve the Lord, interceding before God, through our High Priest, in the heavenly temple at the foot of God's throne. We have no inheritance on the earth, and no part of earthly things, our inheritance is our Savior. There are gobs of verses that we can gain insight from. And again, I am not saying they are the same thing as we are now, or trying to read anything into it, just saying we have a description and instruction of what being a priest is, but of course we now see in the Light what was in shadow. The earthly version of the heavenly, for lack of knowing exactly how to put it.

One thing I think we can learn from God's instructions to the Aaronic and Levitical priesthood is God was REAL serious about every detail, we should also.

    Re: Are you a priest?

    Yes.
    No.
    Both.

The word "priest" comes from the Greek word "presbyteros", often translated as either "presbyter" or "elder".

There is another Greek word that is also normally translated as "priest", but has a completely different meaning. That is the Greek word "hiereus". That is the word that carries the idea of a person who stands between God and man on behalf of man.

It is unfortunate that those two Greek words don't each have their own word in English. Because they're both translated as "priest" in English, there is a lot of confusion, especially when someone talks about their "parish priest", which is actually a "parish presbyter". Then, when someone refers to their "parish presbyter" as their "parish priest", others hear that and assume that, because they're using the word "priest", that their referring to the Greek concept of "hiereus", which is not true at all.

Every believer is a "hiereus", but not all believers are ordained to be a presbyter, or a deacon or anything else for that matter. Each believer, as a "hiereus", has a different role to play within the hiereus-hood of believers, some of whom become presbyters.

So, yes, I am a "hiereus".
And no, I am not a "presbyteros" (which is where the word comes from in the first place).

What would be nice is if we were able to create an English word to translate the Greek word "hiereus" in some way other than with the word "priest", and reserve the word "priest" solely for the translation of the Greek word "presbyteros".

    There are others:

Exodus 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Isaiah 66:21 And I will select some of them also to be priests and Levites," says the LORD.

Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 5:10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth."

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

Living in His kingdom, we ARE priests serving under the great High Priest, Jesus Christ.

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer ... But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
    (Heb 8:1-7)

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
    (Rev 1:5-6)
