Murdoch stuns critics, shuts down scandal-hit paper

....close down the News of the World, Britain's biggest selling Sunday newspaper.

Yet no one, least of all the 168-year-old paper's staff, was prepared for the drama of a single sentence that will surely go down as one of the most startling turns in the 80-year-old Australian-born press baron's long and controversial career.
"News International today announces that this Sunday, 10 July 2011, will be the last issue of the News of the World," read the preamble to a statement from Murdoch's son James, who heads the British newspaper arm of News Corp....

    Who is John Galt?

"This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World ... In addition, I have decided that all of the News of the World's revenue this weekend will go to good causes.
"We will run no commercial advertisements this weekend."
Steven Barnett, professor of communications at Westminster University, said he was "gobsmacked":
"Talk about a nuclear option," he told Reuters.
It seems to me that this is a calculated move. To 'destroy' the paper, Rupert Murdoch seems to be sending a message that it is completely up to him to do so.....

Almost certainly a calculated move with some hidden goal lurking behind the scenes.

You don't get to be as powerful as Rupert Murdoch by making rash decisions.
24 August 2013 - I've decided to take a break from a number of internet forums, including this one, for my own reasons.
I expect to be back at some time in the future, although at present don't know when that will be.
I've been here just a few days shy of six years, and those six years have been greatly blessed.

1Jn 4:1 NKJV Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1Th 5:21-22 NKJV Test all things; hold fast what is good. (22) Abstain from every form of evil.

He is after purchasing 100% of BskyB

I think he is trying to distance himself from the 'phone tapping' scandal that has broken out with the NoW, and it could jeopardise his chances with the competitions commission, who are considering his bid.

Yes, this seems to be the 'favored' explanation in the news... but it seems to me that there is more to this.

At the very least, the paper could have been sold... even with the scandal, it could have been purchased and put 'under new management'...

His action was certainly a statement of some kind.
