When this thread started in April, it was about Skyrim, scheduled for release on 11/11.
It was released on schedule. So, anyone bought it yet and care to share first impressions?

To preserve the government we must also preserve morals. Morality rests on religion; if you destroy the foundation, the superstructure must fall. When the public mind becomes vitiated and corrupt, laws are a nullity and constitutions are waste paper. Daniel Webster, 4th of July, 1800, Oration at Hanover, N.H.
Well, I have killed two dragons, participated in a civil war, killed over 100 zombies. Fallen down a waterfall and lived. Been named thane of whiterun. been killed by a giant, saber toothed tiger, giant spider, and some tree looking thing... lol but for real the game is great, they kind of stream lined the whole leveling up process. The dungeons and caves don't feel like reused areas the way oblivion did. The only complaint I have and it's a minor one is sometimes combat feels a bit rough... if like oblivion then you will love this.
Yeah, all the reviews are just eating this game up...so tempting....

Been playing Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind, which is probably my favorite game of all time. Its still sitting on my hard drive actually.
Oblivion on the other hand was a complete let down. It was such a catastrophe, that I was fairly certain Bethesda (the dev studio) would never recover. I was convinced their vision for the Elder Scrolls franchise had permanently tanked.
Skyrim has changed all that. It is, without question, the apex single player RPG experience. Nothing else even comes close, except for Morrowind. If I had to describe the amount of content in game in one word, it would be "preposterous". Where as oblivion was all procedurally generated terrain and cookie cutter points-of-interest, Skyrim is 100% hand crafted and the level design is awe inspiring. Every time you walk into a new dungeon, cave, passage, whatever its like staring into the face of masterpiece artwork. Sometimes I have to stop playing, stand still, and just soak it all in.
Besides brilliantly crafted artistic and level design, all the game play mechanics are compelling and fun. Its classic Elder Scrolls character progression. "You are what you practice". No more Gauntlet style "pick a class and be locked in forever". Doing away with attributes, you no longer have to balance two items for one result. Now skill level = performance, not stat+skill=performance. Combat, magic, and stealth have all had brilliant overhauls. I could write a thread on those improvements by themselves.
To steal a quote from the Ironman2 movie.
"If Skyrim were any smarter, it would write a book, and that book would make ‘Ulysses’ look like it was written in crayon"
If you've ever enjoyed a single player RPG, you should not hesitate in getting Skyrim. If you've never tried a single player RPG, why not start with the best?

Yup. Stuff like that happens all the time (though less frequently with dragons).
- Go out into the wilds and you can see wolf packs or hunters taking down wild game.
- Primitive giants herd woolly mammoths through the countryside. If you get too close, they'll warn you with some foot / club stomping, and if you ignore the warnings they'll crush you into goo.
- Butterflies flutter around flowers. Their wings are good for alchemy. They're just as hard to catch in game as in real life.
- Dragonflies hover and dart over bodies of water. You can catch them the same way you do butterflies.
- I once found a treasure map that was hand drawn. Had to find the treasure by keenly observing the landscape.
- I dropped a sword in a city street once to lighten my load. A guard charged me with endangering the public.
- I dropped a mammoth tusk once, for the same reason. An NPC picked it up and gave it back to me. "You dropped this". To make sure I wasn't dreaming, I did it again. Another NPC picked it up and walked away. "One man's trash is another's treasure".
- Caught a disease while adventuring in a crypt. Came back to town and NPC's commented on how ill I looked.
- Fought a dragon in a narrow ravine. Dragon nose dived and didn't have enough room to pull up. Crashed and killed itself in the ravine wall.
- Brought a follower along on a quest (you can hire or earn them). Was walking down a path when she suddenly says "Hey! A cave! I wonder what's inside". Decided to take a peak. Walked in the front entrance and she says "I have a bad feeling about this...".
- Asked an NPC the same question multiple times. Voice acted responses got progressively more frustrated.
- Stumbled across two NPC's dueling in the wilderness. Pulled out my own weapon and they both shouted "This doesn't concern you!" angrily.
The game world is so vibrant and alive that even my wife commented on it, and she absolutely doesn't "get" gaming.
Sounds simply amazing....

I will, of course, be purchasing Skyrim as soon as possible. It is a sad fact, however, that parts for my AK are taking priority. My gaming world is still being ruled by Arma 2. A video I made of my group:
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death ye will find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betray thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!
Skyrim sold 3.5 million copies in just 48 hours.
