    Tipping for services

I have kind of changed my thinking about tipping. I have always tipped between 15-20% at restaurants, hair cuts/colors, manicures/pedicures.

Yesterday I paid 25 for a pedicure. I thought 25 an hour is not bad. And I know that person doesn't get that whole amount but still 25 is alot of money. And especially if you have something done by someone who owns the business (for example, a hair cut). Don't you think the owner/hairdresser has factored everything into her charges. So why do I have to tip 15-20% for a haircut when I'm already paying her a set amount, and it all goes to her.

I know most waiters/waitresses are paid very little and make most of their money on tips so I'm excluding them of this. I'm mainly talking about haircuts, manis and pedis.

Nah, I don't tip if the person owns the business or is getting a regular salary. I have tipped my AC and TV men lately.

$25 an hour is not a lot. If it's $25 for a worker to do it, then you can bet that worker didn't make more than $12 and probably closer to $9, and 20% of it is going to go to taxes. If it's the owner, then 50% of it is going to paying for the place of business and operating expenses and insurance on workers who screw things up.

Regardless, Miss Manners, i.e. common courtesy, conventional wisdom, proper etiquette, would say you tip on all services like this, 15-20%.

If you think your pedicure costs too much, go to another place. If you think it's ok not to tip, don't tip. If you think the girl who did your pedicure thinks it ok not to tip her, you are mistaken.

I am Australian and in our culture tipping is not seen as a thing that is needed.

If a person provides a service then they should charge a price that will cover the cost of the service and their time and effort in doing it for you.

And employers should pay their employees a fair days pay for a fair days work. It is disgraceful that workers should be forced to rely on tips from customers for their salary. Their employers don't rely on someone tipping them for the meal they just sold. No they charge a set price for the dish.
