Thread: monitor problem

    monitor problem

    Alright, here's my problem.

We have been just using our home computer for using word and playing music from the window media. The other day it froze and so we had to turn it off because ESC or CTRL ALT DEL wouldn't do anything. We turned it back on and the computer came on but the monitor (while the screen is still black) says no input signal and then goes into sleep mode. Moving the mouse does nothing and the keyboard doesn't even light up. We've checked all cables and nothing is bent or anything. It sounds like when you turn it on that nothing is running(as far as programs is concerned...you know when they are starting up).

I don't understand why it has no input when the cables are fineand why it goes into sleep mode. This is not a wireless computer. It is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion a6600f PC.

It is exactly 3 yrs old. I might mention that we've tried putting cd's in=nothing; a reboot system disc=nothing

What could the problem be? How could it work and then after no internet service for at least a month and a half we just use for Word documents and then it freezes?

    Thanks

It sounds like the pc light is turning on but the keyboard is not? (make sure the pc light is actually turning on).

First, I would suggest removing the pc side-panel and doing a good blowout, if you haven't already done that.

Then, since you don't report seeing a Blue Screen, I might suggest the following, to see if there is a component or bios failure:

Make sure the pc is off - monitor on.

Turn on the computer, and immediately, repeatedly (over and over) press the F10 key for eight seconds.

Press the Down arrow three times.

Press the Enter key two times.

    Restart the computer.

    This will reset the BIOS.

Another test you might try after that is to turn on the pc and immediately tap f8 repeatedly. See if that brings you to a screen of any sorts.

Seeing if you can get into safe-mode.

Thx. I will give that a try in just a few minutes.

It didn't work. When I turn on the monito it only stays on for 10 seconds and then says Monitor going into sleep mode.

    Okay.

But when you turn on the pc button does it light up at all?

(it doesn't appear the problem is with the monitor, since the sleep box appears)

Okay, but when you turn on the pc itself (is it a little button on the upper-right of the pc?) does it turn blue.

    You might try this, actually:

Hold down that button on the computer itself until it goes off. Then press it again and see if it lights up.

If need be, I can send you an HP diagnostic CD, if the pc is turning on at all.

By PC I assume you do mean the blue power button on top of the tower? If so, yes, this comes on then the tower just sounds like its just on. I'm sorry I'm not that computer literate. But why does the monitor keep going to sleep? I'm assuming that the mouse being moved won't kick the screen on because its accociated with the tower.

Okay, the problem is not with the monitor but with the computer (PC). (Probably)

I forgot to ask you - did you get or do you have a back-up or repair disk with your computer?

Pushing the blue button was the only way I turn the computer on/off. The disc would be good...is that something I would buy somewhere?

It sounds like the kind of thing that could be a video card failure.

If you've got a replacement video cable that might fix it although from what I've read so far I'm wondering if a new video card might be necessary. Unfortunately if the OP isn't very tech-savvy swapping out a video card might seem rather daunting.

It would be too late to create a repair disc at this time.

I understand you shut the computer off completely before turning it on? (Important) Holding the button down till it goes off then restarting the computer.

And, just to be clear, did you try shutting the computer completely off, then turning it on and immediately hitting the f8 button for about 10 seconds?

The onlyy disc I have is a Software and Documentation disc that came with. And the other is a reboot system one that I made a long time ago. But I assumed I didn't make it right since when I put into the drive the computer just sits there and does nothing

    Right.

If we can't get the screen on at all, that would likely be the problem.

Oh, Okay, if the reboot disc won't show on the screen, it appears you would need to take the computer in for hardware check/repair.
