I believe a meteor will be the cause of the damage to 1/3 of the earth surface. Wormwood i believe is what the bible calls this meteor. It is described as like a burning mountain being cast into the sea. A good first century description of what a meteor would look like to John.

Angels sounding trumpets could not bring plagues on the earth. The seven angels as the "we" angels that came from the east had to have given their plagues to the four standing on the four corners angels to bring forth.

The seven angels had to be the ones that gave the four angels their ability to earth the earth, and the sea, and the trees. The last part of Rev. 8 shows the final three trumpets are earth woes.

The trumpets sound in Rev. 7 but we are told about each one's plague chaos later.
