I don't think I've ever seen this before

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is fending off attacks from national Democrats who are traveling across the state today to blast him outside his own events on the eve of tomorrow’s GOP caucuses…

National Democratic Party officials dive-bombed Romney, who is in Davenport for a grassroots rally, setting up a press conference outside the event with an Indiana worker who was laid off in the 1990s after his company was purchased by Bain.

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz also planned a press conference in Florida focusing solely on Romney and his “attempts to rewrite history, distract voters from his out of touch positions and support for failed policies that won’t help the middle class.”
Attacking the other party's candidate in a primary?

Don't you usually let the party decide who they're sending to the general election first?

    Just very weird.

Obama's and the Left's campaign will be based on fear, vitriol, and anger. The Great Uniter can only win by deepening an already great divide. Unfortunately, the Right will probably do the same.
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
    In the ranks of death ye will find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
    And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betray thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!

Going to be an ugly campaign.

Romney has been focusing his attacks on the President. You think it's weird that the President is going to respond?

In 2004 when Democrats were running for the nomination, they attacked the president too. I may be mistaken, but I don't think he responded.

I understand that Obama is thin-skinned. But it is unseemly, it is not classy, for the president to be attacking people running in primaries. It makes Obama look small, which I suppose he is.

Is Romney the only one they fear?

Whatever, they've certainly tipped their hands here. Incumbents are sposed to act cool and invincible, like ducks on the water.

Obama's been doing this for years. Heck, he's attacked members of the media. First Amendment? What's that?

They didn't? Ever heard of of the term "swiftboating"?

Oh right....the President in 2004 had nothing to do with it!

Was that during the primary season? Or when Kerry was already the Democrat nominee?

During primary season, it was Sen. McCain who felt the full fury and wrath of the Bush (Rove) attack machine. Coming into South Carolina, McCain had a few point edge, so it got down and dirty really quick. I haven't seen anything from the Obama camp coming anywhere near that sort of stuff. Like I said, Romney started with this stuff, and the Obama camp can answer it.

Do you know something the rest of us don't?
    Probably.

In 2004? Bush, like Obama, ran unopposed in the primaries. I think you're confusing it with 2000.

In 2004 Bush ignored the Democrat primaries. He did not campaign against Kerry until Kerry was the nominee.

Obama and the DNC are getting involved in the Republican primary process. I believe this is unprecedented and uncalled for.

    Probably.

You're right, it was 2000. I don't usually make such mistakes. Obama surely had something to do with it.

Pointing out the fact that Romney is making it up as he goes hardly qualifies as "getting involved in the Republican primary process."

I agree that getting involved in the primaries is uncalled for on the Democrats side, but is there any evidence that Obama is involved in any way? He doesn't control the DNC and all actions of the DNC are not necessarily backed by him.

KT, I'm not sure what you meant about McCain in 2004. As Fenris said, Bush was unopposed as the incumbent in 2004 and the Republican party didn't start in against the Democrats until after the primary was over.

In which case, Bush was involved in campaigning during his own primary, which is to be expected. However, he did not campaign against democratic candidates during the democratic primary in 2004, which is what we are talking about here.

Every Republican is running against Obama.

Save it for the general election.

It makes it look like he's trying to pick an opponent. "Anyone but Romney".
