Solomon said that the power of life and death are in the power of the tongue. So apparently your words have meaning. If you speak nothing but positive things, will those things come back to you? What I mean is if you wake up in the morning and say things to yourself in the mirror, like " Today will be a good day ", " You are attractive ", " You are funny " ... will those those words have power?

Sorry if I'm not making sense, I tried to articulate it is as best as I could.

How are you Punchy? I believe words have power. How much is not sure. Belief of those words is the answer.
It's always good to think postitive thoughts.
In the bible I think it says, if you just have faith the size of a mustard seed, then you can move mountains.

I'm not talking about positive thoughts, I'm talking about saying them out loud. I believe you can think positive or negative thoughts, and it won't affect you. The problem is saying them out loud, that's where the power is.

Let's look at this verse closely:

Prov. 18
21Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Yep.

King Solomon is indicating simply that someone will let us live--or will kill us--based on what we answer to them. That's all . . .

i think we all agree words have power, if its not spoken its not a word its a thought.
and proverbs 18 clearly adresess this but herein lies the problem in my opinion, and i am no judge.
but you used words that make me fear for you. you said when i wake up and look in the mirror. and say
what you say, if attractive and funny, why not say you are a great christian, and a life changer to others.
that would make you feel better all day wouldnt it?
it would make you feel great about yourself, read 18;20 again
in fact read ALL of 18 again with this thougght in mind, just for fun
in my opinion it is all about the power of words, but its about what NOT to do, because those words have so much power.
they have the power to condemn you when you are judged.
if you speak good things to other people, will your day not be even better.
good things spoken to others would make you Funny, and attractive to others, not to yourself. 18;20
scripture in the bible is not singular in my opinion, look at before and after to determine the purpose of one.
words have no power in flaterrys to yourself, to make them true, except only to yourself, and at what price.

Let's see the verse:
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:21

When I read it, I think: we are ministers of life (2co 3.6). when we preach the gospel, we are preaching the word of life. when people eat it (i.e, believe in it), they live.

Do we as Christians have the power to save and destroy? In the Bible's words, yes!
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20
For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. Romans 14:15

So the way we use our tongues can have an effect, either to give life or to stumble people. Be careful with it.

I believe that our words, be they negative or positive have power, especially if what your speaking in scripture. I have experienced this many times, as I'm sure many have. Say I wake up tomorrow feeling rather down and negative, I can speak scripture to change that. Paul tells us to take every thought captive, so when I think "oh this is going to be a bad day" I can stop that thought going any further, by saying, this is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. When I feel lonely or unloved, I can say " my Father loves me with an everlasting love" or Jesus promised "I will never leave you nor forsake you" If I am anxious or worried, I can say "Jesus said, peace I give to you, peace leave with you"

These are just examples, but believe me, if you speak out the truth in response to these negative thoughts, they will disappear. You can think it in your mind, but it don't work as good as speaking them out so satan can hear!!

Words can have tremendous power. From a monarch condemning someone to death, to harsh words that forever destroy a relationship, words have represented a tremendous impact, both in the lives of individuals, and in the course of human history. (Consider how profoundly the simple words, "I do" can change the lives of two people). /

Seriously, sometimes a mouth is like a gun; and angry words, like bullets, can go forth and destroy. And, just as a gun cannot be unfired, the harsh words that leave one's mouth cannot be unspoken--which is why we should be careful not to speak carelessly when angry.

I can't imagine that Solomon is not expressing in these scriptures below anything other than the equivalent of "Be careful what you say." Really.
