If I've been babtized by the Holy Spirit, why cant I speak in tongues?

I don't know why the topic of either the past or movements have ANY bearing on the testimonies presented throughout this thread? How the past or those movements have bearing on what God is doing today is beyond me.

what's your position on this movement?

Pardon me for butting in, but while I have not heard God the Father's voice, I do know that the Spirit speaks to us, (internally) on a daily basis. Do you not agree.

Great. So if the Spirit speaks to our heart and commands us to relay the message to another person, what would this be called? This is what I hold is possible. If you do not feel this constitutes prophecy then our disagreement is based on semantics, I suppose.

it appears semantics have become important in our modern subjective church.

the Spirit 'speaking to our hearts' needs to be defined.

are you claiming audible, verbal messages word for word (that can and should be written down exactly)?
visions (that can and should be recorded as per the prophets' visions writings in scripture)?

or are you claiming an impression made upon your mind, a prompting to consider, or to decide to do or say something?

there's a HUGE difference.

one would be as authoritative as scripture and directly binding. the other is a Christian learning from the scriptures and submitting to the Helper.

what would it be like to have the Holy Spirit COMMAND you to take a message to someone? how do you know its a command? what does He say and how does He say it? automatic writing? ecstatic utterances through you?

does He dictate to you what you are to say? how do you receive the message?....these are the questions that must be addressed.

Nothing would be written down to be considered as scripture.

Perhaps command is not quite the right word, but if the Spirit leads us to do something, we should dare not refuse, as that would be quenching and grieving the Holy Spirit.

Anything that the Spirit impresses on my heart is to be obeyed, whether it is expressed in a command, a leading, or a impression.

Probably the same way the Holy Spirit speaks to you.

Perhaps some need more encouragment, more building up, and/or more comfort that the path they're on is His path. That is one function of prophets.

why do i need a man who claims to be a mediator/prophet for building up and comfort when i have my pastor, my church family, more importantly, the scriptures and THE COMFORTER?

am i too stupid or lacking in ability or a second-class Christian? is there any reason the Comforter does not lead me personally?

Prophets can confirm or deny for them whether they've heard the Lord. In fact, prophets are to equip saints to hear Him. Take this, or leave it...your choice.

that is part of the Spirit's Commission, isn't it.
to work in us as a body, to help us through the scriptures, to conform us to the image of Jesus, to deliver us to Glory.

We should not forbid the use of God given gifts. Neither should we take one of the manifestations above, (like for example tongues), and say that God manifests Himself in a certain way with every Spirit filled believer.

what were the tongues at Pentecost?
unintelligble noises?
or the languages of the devout jews gathered at Jerusalem from every nation under heaven?
