    How funny is this

To begin this story you have to know a little background. I have two kids, my son is 7, my daughter is 4. They love to watch Nickelodeon.

A couple of nights ago, my son told me to find something on tv. I began flipping through the usual kids programming and he stopped me at something called House of Anubis. I had not heard of the show, so I stopped and watched a couple of seconds. It seemed to have something to do with witchcraft so I made a very pious comment saying, we're not going to watch such garbage as this! And proceeded to flip through the channels stopping on a show that was more familiar, saying there, we'll watch Wizards of Waverly Place!

My wife just rolled her eyes!

That is quite funny. Especially since I saw both of those shows the other night as well. Having 3 kids of my own will do that.

Just remember that just because something has "wizards" and "magic" in it does not, in and of itself make it evil. J.R.R Tolkien was a very strong Christian, he was even on the editorial board for a Bible commentary and his Lord of the Rings has wizards in it. Plus he was instrumental in C.S. Louis coming to Christ. And Louis' Narnia Chronicles had magic in it (as well as a very obvious Christ figure in it). And Louis is a very strong Christian apologist and Christian thinker and writer.

    This.

As evidenced by the fact that you apparently see no problem with Wizards of Waverly Place, just because there is magic in this other show, doesn't make it bad. I don't know anything about the show, so I can't speak about it in specifics, but in glancing over the plot on Wikipedia, it doesn't seem bad to me.

I think it's only the British Wizards that worry people. :-)

Is that like Harry Potter? I've never read or watched the movies, not because of any religious reasons, I just never felt an interest.

Oh, I know, I was just making a comment about how easy it is to replace one sin with another. Not that I am calling a television program sinful, well maybe I am........ We DO have to be careful what we let into our minds. Remember the song, Be careful little eyes what you see? There's a lot of truth in that. And I, as a father of two young children, have to be especially careful.

As for Tolkien, I have only read a few of his works, LOTR, The Hobbitt, and most recently The Silmarillion. Nothing inherently wrong with those books, quite good reads actually. Now Lewis, I love Lewis' works. However, I have read somewhere that the history and animal characters were actually created while he was still an atheist. I found that ironic. The fact that mention Tolkien and Lewis at the same time is not lost on me. One of my favorite Lewis books is Surprised By Joy, in which he talks about his friendship with Tolkien and how he was instrumental in his conversion to christianity. The Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity, there are just so many. I am actually reading a book now called The Question of God, which is a debate between him and Sigmund Frued.
