I agree that turkey sandwich (depending on how it was prepared and the ingredients) is likely to be healthier than chicken nuggets.

But in general I think it's good that others try to help the children eat healthy if the parents don't.
I think the program "Jamie Oliver's School dinners" was about this.
Jamie's project was quite successful in some UK schools, but if I don't remember incorrectly, he was literally thrown out of a school in the US! They wouldn't hear of his boiled fish and fresh vegetables...

The problem is the inspector took away a child's lunch and she was forced to eat something else. If he was concerned he could have sent a note home. Its a sad day when our schools can pass out condoms without a parents permission, but a child can't eat a sandwich cause its 'unhealthy'. I'm so glad my son is out of school.

When you see this kind of encroachment by the government into the realm of personal choice, it should be seen as a red flag and harbinger of things to come. I'm reminded of an old object lesson about loss of civil liberty, in which wild pigs--lured to an area with corn, are oblivious to the strategic, gradual construction of a fence around that area during their absence. They become accustomed to the ongoing additions, and are focused on the free food. Eventually, a complete enclosure is built, including an open gate. At the right time, when a sufficient number of pigs are eating their fill, someone creeps up and slams the gate shut. The pigs run about wildly, realizing too late, they have lost their freedom.

A socialist enclosure is being built around America today. And most are oblivious to it--too busy procuring and enjoying entitlements, while being misinformed by fluff news, and distracted by the cornucopia of electronic entertainment and latest high-tech gadgets. When an official goes to a public school and takes away a perfectly nutritional lunch prepared by the child's mother, and makes the child eat something else, that is the epitome of Big Brother flexing his muscles. This should make everyone either very angry, or very afraid, because this is an example of the fence-building.

Many laws have been enacted since 9/11 which effectively limit or eliminate our rights and liberties, and further facilitate intrusion by the government into our personal lives--ostensibly to keep us safe. Benjamin Franklin famously said, "Those who sacrifice liberty for security will lose both, and deserve neither." The federal government now has the authority to arrest and hold indefinitely, any person in the United States--without being formally charged, and without explanation, or due process of law. This sounds like something that happens in places like China or Russia, but it is now the law of this land. Like the pigs, millions of deluded and oblivious Americans are ignoring the fence of government authority being constructed around them, and will remain oblivious until the gate slams shut. One day soon, they are going to be shocked to discover that they have lost their freedoms--along with the America that once was.

As has been demonstrated the supplied lunch was actually better than the alternative. I'm not sure why the packed lunch was disposed of instead of augmented with the cafeteria food - that simply seems wasteful.

But I must kind of wonder about the automatic connection of some low-level health inspector being an idiot and this absolutely representing what the government or Mrs. Obama wants. Stupid stuff happens all the time, but it's not necessarily a causal correlation to the federal policies.

Apparently not. Walmart in fact, just announced plans to jump on Michelle's bandwagon, and will alter the labeling of their food products to advertise what they deem the more nutritional choice for the consumer to purchase. Nope, agenda here.

Another point that was shown in his show here in the U.S., and the main reason the schools were resistant over what he was trying to achieve, is the fact that these corporations that supply the horrible food/drink choices have a monopoly of sorts, it's all very incestious when you follow the connections and money with these schools, government, and the food corporations.

I actually think that it would be a good thing for there to be some sort of protection in place for the children in this country when it comes to diet because we really do have an epidemic with childhood obesity. I think it's abusive when parents let their children get obese... they're setting them up for heart disease, strokes, disease, isolation, depression, etc. The problem I have is when actual health science isn't involved and it becomes about how much money certain corporations can throw around when determining what is healthy and what is not.

I am aware that she advocates for healthier food for kids. I am not aware its a war. Also it still does not demonstrate a direct causal link between her position and the decision by this health inspector in NC. If we start to see a routine pattern occurring throughout the country, then it's easier to argue that the policy is directly being applied.

And, Sojourner, haven't you noticed lots of companies regularly advertise on their own packaging (not the retailer) of the supposed benefits of their product. Most of these are completely misleading if not fraudulent (the Omega 3 additions in things like bread have to be the worst).

They don't need those guys. There is already technology in place that can track purchases--at least by people who use plastic. Most people would be shocked if they knew what the government knows about them and their personal habits.
