Hard question. It doesn't give us any information on that but this is a parable so they don't really exist.
It would be nice to have added and tax collector refunded all the money he tricked people out of as he moved by the Holy Spirit.
I like to think other people would be like Wow you have changed and he would be like yes I am a new person.

Other people could answer this question better than me. I haven't gotten that far yet.

    ---------------------

Question about this parable, do you think the tax collector ever knew he was saved? Obviously the Pharisee "knew" he was saved, but do you think the tax collector ever knew or felt redeemed or do you think that is not a teaching to read into this parable?

This is something I have wondered every since hearing the gospel for the first time as an adult.... I know that if that parable was real and we were to be there and interview them, the pharisee would tell us all about his salvation while I am guessing the tax collector would tell you about his hopelessness and plead for mercy to God... I just wonder if after the tax collector is redeemed does he look like the pharisee on his next visit to the temple thanking God for his new life apart from sin or does he still shy away and refuse to even look up?

When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

Yea that is why Jesus said woe unto you pharisees for leading people to their destruction.
God had sent prophets time and time again to bear witness and instead of being accepted they were killed.
So God finally sent Jesus and they wouldn't listen to him either.
But by saying the tax collector left forgiven we know he was a true believer. Because Jesus doesn't just forgive you for this or that and you have to get your next sins forgiven. If he has forgiven you then all your sins all covered.

Amen! Acts 13:39 - and by Him everyone who believes is justified from ALL things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
