Have faith in God
Luke 17:5-6- Have faith in God.
Jesus had just given a teaching on forgiveness that must have seemed very daunting to His disciples. He taught them not to just forgive once, nor to merely forgive three times, ( which the Rabbis taught), not to forgive seven times only, ( which Peter at one time offered to do, trying to exceed the Rabbis), Jesus actually taught to forgive seven times in one day. Now I don't think the number seven is meant as a literal limit, as if to say if someone offended you an eighth time you don't have to forgive them. I think Jesus was saying forgive repeatedly.
This must have seemed like quite a challenge, for the disciples responded by saying, "Lord, increase our faith". At this point, Jesus taught a wonderful lesson on faith that can be summed up in two points.
1. It is not the ammount or the size of the faith but the object of the faith that matters.
The disciples asked Jesus to increase or add to their faith. They thought if only they had more faith, they could better keep Jesus' commandments and do greater things. In reply, Jesus said that even small faith, ( even as small as a mustard seed), could accomplsh great things. It is the object of our faith, not the size of our faith that enables us to do great things and creates miracles. God can do great things through little faith. Faith is not positive thinking or visualization, it is trust in God with Whom nothing is impossible.
2. Faith connects us to the dynamic power of God.
Jesus said if we have faith even as small as a mustard seed, we could say to a sycamore tree move and it would be moved. Faith makes the impossible possible, the heavy burden lighter, the unexplainable simple. It turns obstacles to stepping stones, mountains into ladders, and moves the immovable object. We all have obstacles, difficulties, and struggles in our lives, and I have found from experience that faith is the key to rising above them all. Faith makes the crooked paths straight and make the darkness as bright as mid day. Faith is the victory!
Psalm 18: 28 For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. 29For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.
Have faith in God!
1 John 1:7- But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
2 Corinthians 7:1- Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
