church: institutional or communal :

Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from the selfish desires that war within you. (James 4:1 NCV)

It has become popular to minimise or ridicule church. This line of thinking says that church is part of a cold and clinical religious and institutional view of God. As an example, a recent Youtube clip 'Why I hate religion, but love Jesus' went viral with over 19 million views and 123,000 comments posted. The clip is popular exactly because of the notion that all things 'religious' must be feared, and all things 'relational' must be embraced. Perhaps instances of abuse of power and hypocrisy on the part of church (somewhere and sometime) are mentioned. This remains the main argument by atheist fundamentalists like Dawkins and Maher. Perhaps the desire for a warm and vibrant relationship with God is believed to be stifled in an institutional church environment where rules and leadership are present.

In this line of thinking 'church' as we understand it is an actual hindrance to growing in relationship with Christ, and is either ignored or completely redefined to become something very vague with no leadership and little direction - at best a comfortable association of like-minded people. Following Christ then becomes a personal and individual adventure, where I allow some people whom I personally like to share in my personal adventure.

The causes of this type of thinking can be attributed to many factors. Certainly there is a broad and pervasive suspicion of institutions on a global scale. In 2011 'The Person of the Year' was dubbed by Time Magazine as the 'Protestor' to indicate the global scope of protest that occurred against governments and other institutions in that year. This can contribute to the vague suspicion that church is like other institutions that do not have the wellbeing of its constituents as an important value, and therefore cannot be trusted.

Another cause may be the current main social value of the Western world, which is individualism. All aspects of society, like economics, politics, health and even family, are solely focused on the interest of the individual above the interest of the group. This is reflected in church where the personal interest of an individual (and not Christ) can become all-consuming. But equally Scripture warns us that as time progresses toward the coming of Christ, a hatred towards anything that can be construed as 'law' will exponentially increase (1 Thessalonians 2). 'Law' in this instance refers to a moral or civic rule or standard that a person should comply with - irrespective of how he feels about it.

And exactly herein lies the problem. The work of God is certainly always relational. But this implies that more than one person is involved. And since more than one person is involved, His work occurs within a community. "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20).

Even a quick screening of the Bible will make it clear that God never solely works with an individual. There is always a church community involved. And a community implies that there are people different from myself with different cultures, upbringings and stories. With different needs, problems, potential and abilities to mine. In fact, at any given time in a church community there are many people in various stages of being introduced to Christ, of learning to know themselves and to know God, of being healed of hurts and sins, of growing and overcoming, of struggling and seeking, of resting and worshipping. And in such a diverse community moral standards, rules and indeed leadership are not only necessary, they are vital exactly for the sake of the well-being of both the community of church and of the individual.

Church without moral standards, rules and leadership is, in the end, merely a crowd. There is no cohesion or resolution, no vision and in the end no real relationship. The institutional side of church (however the workings thereof are defined) always has and always will be integral to building a vibrant church community.

And equally this group, this community, this church is as important as I am, if not more important. And here the challenge actually arises for church in modern society. In Biblical terms the cause of the apprehension towards church is pride (Philippians 2). Pride on the side of leaders who may willfully sin against people in church and hurt and offend them in the process, and pride on the side of church members who may elevate their own interests above those of other people (and also then hurt and offend others). The function of pride, in Biblical terms, is to have an unerring focus on the interest and importance of oneself. A section out of the Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis is instructive in this regard.

In this book by Lewis, Screwtape is a fictional character who writes letters as an experienced demon to an apprentice tempter, mentoring him on how to influence new believers. He gives the inexperienced tempter the following advice: "One of our great allies at present is the Church itself. Do not misunderstand me. I do not mean the Church as we see her spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as an army with banners. That, I confess, is a spectacle which makes our boldest tempters uneasy. But fortunately it is quite invisible to these humans... When he gets to his pew and looks round him he sees just that selection of his neighbours whom he has hitherto avoided. You want to lean pretty heavily on those neighbours... Provided that any of those neighbours sing out of tune, or have boots that squeak, or double chins, or odd clothes, the patient will quite easily believe that their religion must therefore be somehow ridiculous."

Pride reduces other people in the community of church to merely "that one" that sings out of tune, that has squeaky boots and odd clothes (in the description of Screwtape). In other words pride always leads to contempt. And contempt has an inability to see the potential and preciousness of each person within the community of church. It then creates a situation where someone cannot see the church as a powerful expression of the Kingdom on earth (the Body of Christ), or visible reminder of the beauty of His salvation among the ordinary (the Bride of Christ). And that is not true religion (James 1:27)
