Why wouldn't it work? If its allegory, the story need not be literally true.

I'd be puzzled because the acids in fish would have surely ruined Jonah's body.

Probably not anything NEAR what the grave would to to a body after three days.....

It would seem that in this 'story' of Jonah and a great fish arise from the myth of the monster in the sea as the sea serpent Leviathan. That would force one to believe in this myth.

I don't know what you're trying to say. Can you elaborate with more attention to grammar? Thanks.

The story of Jonah and the great fish comes from the myth of the dragon "Leviathan" of the sea. (Isaiah 27:1) Where the monster and the sea are symbolic rather than literally. I think we should apply that same logic to understanding Jonah story and that of Peter and Jesus walking on water.

Well-stated. I agree. The belly of the fish (leviathan) and the sea itself are symbols of the powers of darkness and death, which Jesus conquered and which we can conquer through Him.

My pastor taught on faith this weekend and used this as an example. What he said was if you have the faith of a mustard seed.......He used the walking on water example to illustrate how Peter took hold of that faith and walked on water but when he let go of it, by looking at the wind, he fell. The Spirit connected the verse of we walk by faith not by sight to that. Then later in the day at another church the pastor spoke of Eve looking at the fruit and ......... Walk by faith, not by sight is applicable to many things. If you have faith and believe why can't you move a mountain? walk on water? The disciples asked Jesus what is the greatest work we can do and Jesus said believe. Believe in all that I have said, believe in the things you cannot see all around you that I'm telling you about. Believe you are everything I say you are and although that is contradictory to what the world tells you, if you truly believe, all things are possible.

If Jesus came walking up to you while you were in the boat and said come, do you really think you would hesitate? I think I'd be just like Peter, jumping out of the boat because I saw Jesus doing it and then being overcome by the old mind and worldly thoughts and fall. I hate that, but my mind is not that renewed yet.

    No...I'm not joking.
If you have a hard time believing the dude and the fish as a literal miracle of God because of the acids in the fishes stomach, what do you need to then do with a man dead in his grave for three days rising uncorrupted? You have quite a quandary here, don't you? I'm not joking and I'm not trying to be a smart-aleck. I am just saying, if you can't believe the one, how the heck do you believe the OTHER one....??

What do you think would happen to a dead body after three days in a tomb?

Say what...? So no Jonah, though Jesus spoke of him as an actual prophet who actually did what the O.T. says he did? No walking on water? That's symbolic too?

Was Jesus born in a manger, or is that symbolic as well...?
    The Rookie

Twelve is the number of government. Thus, it is quite apropos that I am on my way towards wielding the power of twelve bars - each bar like, say, a tribe.....or a star.....or, maybe an apostle. A blue apostle. Like apostle smurfs. Does anyone remember smurfs? And all the controversy about them being from the devil? It's probably bad that I juxtaposed "apostle" and "smurf" in the same sentence. But then, I probably lost you at "blue apostle". Yes, my friends, this is what "rare jewel of a person" is actually implying. "Rare Jewel of a Person" really means, "Potentially Insane".

Fascinating. So you think Jesus rose from the grave with rotting flesh and maggots crawling in him?

He wasn't born in a manger; he was born in a cave, and yes there is symbolism in that.
