This commandment covers everything. If we love our neighbor as Christ has loved us or how we love ourselves, why would we hurt them? Why would we be jealous of them? Why would we destroy them, gossip about them, murder them, lust after them. Keeping Christ as our focus and this commandment should be everything. Lord, I pray that You would come in and stop myself from believing that I deserve anything from anyone. I deserve hell, but Christ, You took that away. Why are you searching for love? Why are you still looking as if I'm not enough?
It's very important to always remember this, isn't it? It is so easy for the flesh in us to have an attitude toward people, judge, criticize and ignore, etc....but we must always think of each person as Jesus when it comes to our treatment of them.
It's interesting you chose the verse from John as the other 3 gospels say "as thyself" instead of as I have loved you. I like John the best because our love for our self starts at feeling his love for us. Our modern church puts such an emphasis on making our identity that of a sinner that I think so many of us feel we are filthy dirty and only through Christ are we suffered by God. That God's love is poured upon Jesus and he's our ticket in.
I see a different father. A father looking upon his child with adoration, much like a new father holding his child for the first time..... I remember Matt Chandler putting into a great modern parable. He said there was this man that was startled awake in the middle of the night. He realizes his baby is crying from the other room. He comes in to find that the baby has pooped its diaper and has removed the diaper, smearing poop on the walls, the bed, the bedding and all over himself and is greatly troubled by its situation. The Father doesn't hesitate in picking up his child and taking it to the bathroom where he starts a bath and gently cleans his child, dries him off and wraps him in a towel. Then he returns to the room and gathers up the soiled linens and cleans the walls and bed. Runs a load of laundry and puts fresh sheets on the bed. Then dresses the child again and holds the child and sings it lullabies until it falls back asleep...... Is that not a great story of how the Spirit finds us when we are first led to conviction of our sin. It is this love and adoration that Father gives to us that we reflect into the world and back at him, much like the moon being lit up by the sun.
We get original sin really good, but we forget about original glory. We forget or maybe don't know that before Genesis 1:1 that there existed Father, Son and Spirit in unity and love. Jesus prays in John 17 that they may know the love you had for me before the foundation of the world. It wasn't sin that motivated God to do all that he did. He created this world and us to share the love that existed before time began. That's his motivation. Jesus is an act of that love (for God so loved the world), not a reaction to sin.
Let us see ourselves as God sees us. As his child, as a heir, as the beloved, as that baby in Papa's arms. Then let us reflect that love to our neighbor!

True-love now/today can only be lifted/raised truthfully when: it is lifted to be compared/contrasted with it's parallel, but only until all things be restored. After all things be restored, then it will have no parallel and hence cannot be lifted/raised, but can only be lived/raised as.

This refreshed me today. Amen, bro/sis! I agree that when you truly love God you just do everything that he did when He was Jesus on Earth. I strongly believe that, though the highlight of His human existence was His crucifixion, He wanted every believer and would-be believers to follow in His footsteps without pretention; with a whole heart. It's a joyful think for me that whenever I look back and compare my old self with the new, I see the work of Jesus in me. I love people, friends and enemies alike, the way God intended for them to be loved. That is, to not cause them any pain, but nurture them; tell them the Truth that saves them; pray for them. I can list more ways in how to love other people, but there's too many! I just know that when you love Christ, love flows naturally.
When you love Christ, you let go of yourself. This is good because the main reason why we find it difficult to love others is because we protect ourselves. But without our love of self, or at least if our love for ourselves is greatly lessened by His grace, we are enabled to just turn the other cheek in every situation. And that's loving our neighbor!![]()

Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe [unto him], through whom they come!

It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.
