Or (d) the prophets, the Sages, and the Jewish thinkers of the Middle Ages realized that sacrifices were symbolic enactments of processes of mind, heart and deed that could be expressed in other ways as well.It said the Jews no longer sacrifice animals, and that means one of several things. (a) Either they no longer care to make atonement for their sins, or (b) they have abandoned their God, or (c) they no longer have a Temple and priesthood which is required to make animal sacrifices.
That's in the original article.
Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it on the islands from afar, and say, "He Who scattered Israel will gather them together and watch them as a shepherd his flock."

Without the temple and sacrifices there are no measures to holiness in God's real presence. Sure you can do good works....but these do not replace the first great commandment Loving God with all we are. Rather these acts of tsedaka are just that...righteousness stemming from obedience to the second great commandment..loving others as yourself.
So the holiness and Shekinah presence seem to be abandoned in order to allow the religion to continue. God Himself seems to have been sacrificed for this.
The truth is that holiness is now found in the person of Christ and the new creation IN holiness so that we are now the temple of God and the shekinah is within us and among us. Judaism has now focused on a righteousness that men can accomplish WITHOUT God's presence.

Unhappy is he who mistakes the branch for the tree, the shadow for the substance.

Fenris, here's some questions that come to mind, keeping in mind that I may be misunderstanding the OP all together and have entirely missed the point. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened.
What would all this mean in the long run, as in regards to the Jewish expectation of another temple? Would this mean that plans for another temple, that this would no longer be an expectation? Or would it mean if the temple is still expected to be built someday, and if and when it does get built, would it mean animal sacrificing would not be a part of the ceremonies?
EDIT: I meant to reply to the OP, not to Keck. Sorry about that.
Jeremiah 9:24 ..."let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD.
Perhaps God is present whenever a person does kindness, justice, or righteousness? Whoa.
