Yes God defeated satan a long time ago. What is left is for each man to decide if they are going to join with Jesus in His victory and have eternal life with Him or are they going to reject Jesus and side with satan. The battle is a battle of the minds of the consciences of men.
So yes God has won. But whom will take part in that victory and who will not is still being worked out.
All Praise The Ancient Of Days
When was this over?
Mar 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
Mar 5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
Demons were still around possessing people at the time of Christ. After Christ's life the Devil is still around...
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
And still around at the time of the tribulation...
Rev 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
Rev 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
Rev 12:16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
They aren't in lock up yet, that occurs at the return of Christ and the beginning of the Millenium...
Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
When you watch a movie or play, what you are watching is the acting out of a script in which the entire story is already written out, from start to finish. In a similar manner, we in the physical realm are merely acting out what God ordained before He even created the material universe. To God, it's a done deal, and all things are completed. But to man, Satan and the spirit beings, it is an unfolding story, scripted in eternity, and being manifested in the material universe day by day.
We read in Rev Rev 13:8, that Jesus is the lamb of God, slain from the foundation of the world ; in Philippians 3:20, Paul states that we are presently citizens of heaven; Rev 17:8 declares that the names of the saved are already written in the book of life. These and other passages show us that the realm we live in is but an echo of the Word of God uttered in eternity--and forever settled in heaven. God determines the destiny and declares the end from the beginning (46:10), but He often fulfills His will and purpose for man through man. The battle is already won, but we must act out God's grand design in the time-space continuum of the physical universe. You must understand the difference between eternity and our physical universe.
When we stand before the Judgment Seat, we will have retained only two things from our earthly life: what God gave us, and what we did with what He gave us.
Thanks, John. I think the underlying problem with misunderstandings such as that posed by vlad, is the failure to put heaven and earth in the proper perspective. Mind-bending truths such as God's entire plan already being fulfilled, and our already dwelling in the eternal, New Jerusalem with Him, is a concept too deep for our feeble minds to truly perceive as reality. Yet the true reality is God's reality--and that is simply way beyond our comprehension. No greater exercise in futility exists than the attempt by finite, human minds to fully comprehend the infinite mind of God:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Only Jesus as the Logos--the mind, will and purpose of God robed in humanity--can "declare" Him. Which is why so many misunderstandings and bizarre concepts of God exist apart from Him.
When we stand before the Judgment Seat, we will have retained only two things from our earthly life: what God gave us, and what we did with what He gave us.
At Revelation 12, there is seen a war between "Michael and his angels" and "the dragon and its angels".(Rev 12:7) This war immediately follows "a woman" giving "birth to a son, a male child who is to shepherd all the nations with an iron rod."(Rev 12:5) What does this mean ? It need be remembered that Revelation is written in "signs" (Rev 1:1), with the vast majority of it being symbolic. Therefore, what is seen at Revelation 12 is pictoral of major events that have shaped the moral fiber of the earth in these "last days".(2 Tim 3:1)
The "birth" of a "son, a male child" is not what some believe, that of Jesus Christ, for he has been in existence for billions of years, being the "firstborn of all creation."(Col 1:15) Rather, this is something that has come into existence through the "woman", who also is not either Eve nor Mary, but is a symbolic woman, for this "woman" is seen in heaven "arrayed with the sun, and the moon as beneath her feet", having a "crown of twelve stars".(Rev 12:1)
This "woman" pictures God's loyal angelic hosts, that gave "birth" to a heavenly government, God's kingdom, that began to be prepared by our Creator, Jehovah God, in the Garden of Eden (Gen 3:15), establishing that a "seed" of the "woman" (or from among the body of loyal angels) would deal a deathblow to "the serpent", who is identified as Satan the Devil at Revelation 12:9.
With the "birth" of the "male child" or God's kingdom, the "dragon", Satan, sought to destroy it, knowing that this heavenly government is the means by which he will he himself will be annihilated.(Matt 6:10) Hence, a war broke out "in heaven", unseen to human eyes, whereby "Mi´cha·el and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven."(Rev 12:7, 8)
However, God's kingdom did come into existence, becoming operational in 1914. With it now functioning, the 1st thing on the agenda was to dispose of the troublemakers - Satan and his demons - from heaven. Revelation 12 says: "So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him."(Rev 12:9)
This unseen war and subsequent throwing Satan and his demons out of heaven had repercussions, for Revelation 12:12 says: "On this account be glad, you heavens and you who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to you, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.” With Satan's ouster, great troubles now began on the earth, that would accelerate until these are climaxed at the "great tribulation" in the near future.(Rev 7:14)
Jesus identified several of the "woes", tying these in with his (invisible) "presence" at Matthew 24. Four of Jesus apostles had asked Jesus a composite question: "Tell us, When will these things be (of the temple being destroyed), and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?”(Matt 24:3)
Jesus gives several identifying features of the "sign of (his) presence", saying: "For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress."(Matt 24:7, 8) With his being forcibly cast out of heaven in 1914, Satan then went and caused a global conflict. This was World War I, that began on July 28, 1914, eventually involving 93 percent of the earth's population.
Thus, the unseen war in heaven between Jesus and his angels and Satan and his demons has caused massive woes throughout the earth, creating a society of people that are loveless, for Jesus further said that "because of the increasing of lawlessness, the love of the greater number will cool off."(Matt 24:12)
We are the at the crescendo of lovelessness, whereby many are "lovers of themselves, self-assuming, haughty".(2 Tim 3:2) Having a moral compass is fast disappearing, for the "spirit of the world" is permeating throughout human society.(1 Cor 2:12; Eph 2:2) Hatred is now taking the stage more and more.
The "male child" or God's heavenly government will bring genuine peace to the earth by permanently removing Satan, his demons and his "seed" (Gen 3:15), those who display his characteristics (see John 8:44), having a disdain for our Creator, Jehovah God.(Rev 20:7-10; Prov 2:21, 22) It will see to it that the earth is transformed into a paradise (Luke 23:43; Rev 21:3-5), as God originally purposed (Gen 1:28), bringing to human perfection the "meek" ones who will reside on it forever.(Ps 37:11, 29)
