    Re: The Spirit Baptism

If I go to 1 Peter 3, I can see that at water baptism, the Holy Spirit removes our sins and give us a clear conscience. I can see in Titus 3 that the Holy Spirit regenerates us during Baptism. I can see that being baptized removes our sins and makes us a new person - born again. All of those are different than walking in the spirit and exhibiting the fruit of the spirit.

Being filled with the spirit with gifts that enable us to serve.... well, that appears to be a different thing. All of God's adopted children are regenerated by the Holy Spirit. Not all of them walk with the Holy Spirit or exhibit gifts of the spirit. Paul, when speaking to other Christians, told us that we need to be filled with the spirit, but that does not mean that we speak in tongues.

    a. You put on the Lord Jesus - Ga 3:26-27
    b. Your sins are washed away - Ac 22:16
    c. Your sins are remitted (forgiven) -Ac 2:38
    d. You die to sin and are freed from sin - Ro 6:1-7
    e. You are baptized into the body of Christ - 1Co 12:13
    f. You are saved through the resurrection of Christ, as you make an appeal for good conscience - 1Pe 3:21

    Re: The Spirit Baptism

Ok I'm going on personal experience here.

I only received the baptism of the Holy Spirit years after I did the alter call and was baptised in water. The turning point was when I stopped holding to the church teachings of that denomination and delved into the scriptures myself and then started to confess to others what the scriptures said, not what the church taught. I stepped out in faith and God baptised me there, only when I had the right understanding and was willing to take a stand for it.

In other words I was given the tools I needed to do the job of explaining the salvation message when I needed it, not before.

Trying to nail down a methodology in regards the things of God can be misleading. I think for most the Spirit baptism is a second work of grace. But not for all. I myself received this at the outset. There is also the house of Cornelius to consider where as Peter preached the gospel the Holy Spirit fell on them. Yet at Samaria Philip had only baptized the new converts in water and needed for Peter and John to come and lay hands on them in order to receive the HS. So it depends on the circumstances.

I didn't vote in the poll. I think it can come either way. We see it both ways in the book of Acts. I do believe that Spirit baptism CAN be a secondary event to salvation.
I think the baptism brings gifts(such as tongues) but that they are not the evidence. The evidence is an ability to walk in love, endure persecution with joy and manifest the divine nature of Jesus.
Lord, one thing I ask...use me for your glory.

AMEN! The purpose and end ( purpose) of the Baptism of the Spirit is Power to witness, and it's chief demonstration is love from a pure heart and faith unfeigned. The Gifts are tools to be used to reach the lost and to edify one another in love, and are not an end in themselves, but powerful means to the end, which is to preach the Gospel to every creature and for the church to edify one another.
1 John 1:7- But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

2 Corinthians 7:1- Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Very true. Just because God does something a certain way in certain situations doesnt mean He is going to do it that way in every situation. Just like when Jesus healed. Sometimes He spoke a Word, sometimes He laid hands on, sometimes He made clay, and sometimes He wasnt even present to do the healing. And just as when He spoke in times past to the prophets, He did it in "divers manners". The main thing is we need to desire more of God and all that He has ordained for us.

That is true, we can. We can also disregard scripture and not even be aware of it, because we were taught one way which we accepted and will let no one show us our errors. To admit our error goes against that pride which we claim we don't have.

I know... I was in a nice box for a long time while I fought against the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" and ALL the gifts of the Holy Spirit in general. I would say it WAS due to what I was taught as I grew up.

My surrender and the tearing down of pride lasted a year... it's that tough for some I guess.

    Re: The Spirit Baptism

Not so for me. I have been a Christian for only three years, and I am a seminary student today.

My sister-in-law and her husband go to a Pentecostal church and practice "prayer language." They do it easily enough because those in their church do it - it is "what they do." They have no idea what it means or what they are saying, but they feel good about it.

Another friend of mine used to "speak in tongues" because he attended a church where people do it. Now, he does not. I guess his gift wasn't permanent.

I prayed for the gifts because I earnestly desire them. I have not been give that particular gift, nor do I experience immediate healing for anyone, nor do I have the ability to speak for God outside of scripture. I guess I am not an apostle. I am a desciple, though.

I have not put myself in a box and I have no prior teachings to overcome. I am still watching and listening.

    God bless you, my brother.

Hooah!! I was SEVERELY in a box and will say, bound in it. I wasn't able to see and hear due to the bondage to specific doctrines taught to me and it held me tight. So tight, I wouldn't leave the box and as I began to listen... it was hard. Like I said, a year at least to be free of that bondage. I look back at all the "looking" but never seeing, and all the "listening" but never hearing, until sometime during that year I saw and heard... SO, please SEE and HEAR!!

I encourage you to continue as God leads.

Thank you. I fully intend to follow and look for open doors.

My constant prayer is for the understanding of His Word and His Truth. That is what I ask for just after I ask for more faith and love.

    I guess I am greedy.
