OK. Just to clarify. If deeds are self life, and not self, is this a distinction from the self that goes through pain and distress (trials) for the purpose of dying? Are you saying

self life = deeds .... and those we kill
self = soul ..... this we physically give for his sake and the gospels sake

    ??????

Or, are they one and the same?

Putting these deeds to death requires some suffering on our part. When we give up our lives either emotionally, financially or physically this also requires sacrifice and discomfort. This is what is meant by "carrying your cross"

Then we'll have to agree to disagree. In scripture, mortifying deeds is just that, nothing more. When we give up our lives either emotionally, financially or physically this is what is meant by "carrying your cross" or "die daily". Scripture is very clear these two are separate and have nothing to do with each other. The first we do by faith in Christ crucified through the Spirit. The other we do for his sake and the gospel's sake. Because of our experience, looking at what is seen, our flesh, and what we are taught, I know it is very easy to lump these together. However once we have been shown the clear difference, the difference is more than obvious.

The only suffering associated with killing deeds of the flesh is continuing to sin and trying not to in the flesh which leads to dying in your soul for not obeying the gospel.

They are two different events that are evidence of one Christian characteristic...taking up our cross. You can't mortify the deeds of the body without pain. Of course it doesn't say "mortify the body" itself. That would be suicide. Doing any of the things described puts the self life to death. If you don't think there is suffering involved in putting the deeds of the flesh to death then it is only for one simple reason...you haven't experienced it.

Paul never mentions pain with mortifying deeds of the body. He only mentions life, joy, and peace in the Holy Ghost. I've been at this a long time shep, and as I said above there"s only pain in mortifying deeds of the body because you haven't mortified anything because you are still sinning, trying to do in the flesh what can only be done in the Spirit. The soul that sins shall die, if you are carnal minded you die. We have all experienced this negative death for this very reason, and we see it in the OP of the "pain of sanctification" thread and in Nobunaga's testimony. This depressing walk will help you stop sinning to a degree simply because you are depserate to get out of the dark. So your own self discipline and will holds sin back as long as it can, but it never lasts and it's never 100% effective. The power of God does last and is 100% effective.
