PC won't keep the correct time.

I was working on my pastor's laptop whan I noticed the time and date was several months ahead. So I reset it. By the next day it was already 2-3 hours fast. Is there a way to fix a computer that it's time runs fast like that? I was thinking of trying to reflash the bios to see if that would fix it. But I was also thinking that maybe this is a MOBO chip problem which means laptop will never keep time right.

Or could this be a virus that does this? Here's why I think this maybe so....

What's kinda strange is that a few weeks ago I worked on his desktop that was ahead in time as well. I did not keep it long enough to see if it was running fast in time as well. For I only had it for one day. Had the laptop for several days. I find that this may point to some type of infection. Any ideas?

Replace the battery that is responsible to keep track of time..... somewhere inside I dunno which board, but there is a battery that is responsible for this action.... I only know because I replaced my a month ago....
I also thought it was a virus.... but a couple of bucks later all worked well

I have had a few batteries go out on a couple of computers. When this is the problem the pc time actually resets to a much earlier year (like 2001 etc...) because the bios memory is wiped every time the pc is turned off. That's not what's happening here.

Now I read on another forum where you have to set the correct time then sync it with windows time.com and that fixes it. It fixed the guys pc who had the same problem I do. I just did this about an hour ago I will check time later tonight or tomorrow and see if that worked. I let you guys know.

Also I don't like taking apart laptops because there are so many little parts that can fall out and get lost or you cannot figure out how it goes back in. Or it just won;t go back together or something decides not to work once back together. I stick to desktops because I can always fix what wrong there if I mess up. But since I had one laptop actually burn up (smoked up) after working on it I don't touch the insides of laptops anymore. Even though all I did was upgrade memory and replace power supply it still, to the customer, looked like I had something to do with what happened once it left my house.

Check to see if his laptop and desktop have the correct zone. This should do the trick.

Well that did not work and I did check the timezone settings. But I did find the problem. While in the bios I watched it pass seconds. At first it seemed normal as I counted with it 1001 1002 etc... But then it started passing the seconds in about twice the speed if not faster. Then it slowed down to normal then did it again for a few seconds. This looks like a much bigger problem.

Well I just updated the bios. That's the longest flash i have ever seen with several steps to it. But now it's not doing that slow count then fast count deal. It counts seconds at a steady pace. It usually gets about an hour or 2 off every 24 hours. So if the bios flash does not fix it then I try beckrl's advice. And if that don;t work I shoot it LOL.

The bios flash worked. Turned it on this morning and it has correct time and date. Thanks for everyone's help.
