This thread is, perhaps, long overdue. There is a cadre of folks who believe that study of Greek and Hebrew, as well as study of history is THE way to properly understand and interpret scripture. To this I say, balderdash and poppycock!

Paul plainly stated, in 1 Corinthians 2, that the wisdom of man is not capable of discerning the things of the Spirit. I say the wisdom of man includes philosophy, scholarship, and any other endeavor upon which man may embark, through which he can apprehend the truth of scripture and the will of God. What say you?

Absitively and posolutely. However, there is no way to know whether scholars are writing at the behest of the Spirit unless the Spirit confirms it. Simply having the knowledge of Greek, Hebrew, history, seminaries, etc., is NOOOOOO guarantee of knowledge of the truth. That comes only through the Holy Spirit.

This type of ant-scholarship is bewildering, there are some great scholars out there doing Gods will and to write them ALL off is ridiculous. If you were not interested in other peoples views and opinions you would not be on this site.... so why attack others for having views and opinion at a higher level ?

W, the Spirit is not going to contradict the language he gave us -Greek for example. The tense is the tense and you can change that in the name of following the Spirit.

The last time I said this, I got into some serious hot water (not here, I don't think) because I offended someone - but here goes.

You must have heart knowledge AND head knowledge. One without the other is useless.

If I have all the head knowledge in the world and do not have heart knowledge of the Holy Spirit, the knowledge has no life.

If I have heart knowledge but have not read my bible and have no foundation to build my heart knowledge ON, then there is a good chance my heart knowledge will shift and skitter.

I say we ought to decapitate all supposed scholars and follow their headless leading on whatever Spirit inspired understanding of Scripture they manage to scribble on whatever surface and with whatever writing device their Spirit inspired hands might happen upon. While we're at it we'll criticize religion on the very same grounds, and create viral-video beat poetry to inspire the thoughtless hipster crowd to our cause.

Then why did God give us brains that do not require the Holy Spirit for activation?

Thinking is no more "fleshly" than breathing. It's a function of the way God made us.
