"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

I have often pondered on this but have never come to any conclusion, any thoughts?

I'll answer to what I understand many mansions be.
1. There will be enough space for all those who belong to God to live in Heaven (New Jerusalem)
2. Another idea .... A Mansion is a glorious place, and our bodies are the dwelling place of God through His Holy Spirit, so, when you think of The Fathers House, there are many glorious dwelling-places where He lives

I think that the "many mansions" are the new, glorified bodies that the faithful will receive.

It means in Zion there are many abidings....right now! Jesus goes on to say....abide in Me and I in you. This is the same thought and uses the same word as "mansions". So we are to forsake our homes here in order to take up a residence in Christ where He is...in Zion in the Spirit.

Do you think abiding in Christ and being seated with Christ are events far into the future?

I understand " I go to prepare a place for you " There could be no way Heaven could accommodate us without his one perfect sacrifice.
My translation has 'rooms'. I suppose what puzzled me was, why the plural 'Rooms' why not say "there is room in my Fathers house for all who believe and abide in me".
The use of the plural could have you thinking that there were different places within a place and then you get onto the " will I have a room with a view or will I be stuck in the basement?"
I don't think it means different levels but I think that's what has been puzzling me.

I do agree with Adstars that this is speaking of the New Jerusalem. As far as what these "rooms" will look like or how they (whatever they are) will differ from one another, I could not even begin to imagine. But because of John 14:3, this all ties in to the time of His return. All I know is I've got a reservation...

Abiding in Christ is what all Christians do now.

Being seated with Christ? I can only think that's fancy religious jargon for being with Jesus after His return and the first resurrection. That may be far into the future but i feel it will be within 20 years.

Not sure why you are concerned by this. If they are rooms or if they are mansions it does not matter to me. If we are with Jesus we will be joyful.

What should matter is that we select our source of scripture that is the most correct and honest that is available to us. Knowing that some words were mistranslated or that any text was added or removed should be a factor is choosing a translation. We first must be honest with ourselves and diligently search for the true words from God. Too many people pick their text our of habit rather than available truth and evidence. The pharisees did the same thing. They did not want to change even when being shown the truth.

I wasn't concerned, just pondering on a verse and wondered what others thought. Obviously not the right thing to do, ponder that is. Then I get the distinct impression that I'm a fool for not checking out all the translations.
