We hear nothing of Joseph after Jesus was 12 years old and his parents lost track of him in Jerusalem. We hear much more about Mary. Logic dictates that Joseph must have died. The Bible does not say that, but we can only assume. Also, while Jesus was on the cross, he instructed John, to take care of his mother. Why would He have done that if Joseph were still living.

I've heard that Joseph died during Jesus's childhood. That would explain his absence at the cross.

I was under the assumption that he was much older than Mary. If that was the case, it makes sense to assume that he had died.
Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it on the islands from afar, and say, "He Who scattered Israel will gather them together and watch them as a shepherd his flock."
Jeremiah 31:9
I think God in His mercy took Joseph before Jesus was crucified.
Unhappy is he who mistakes the branch for the tree, the shadow for the substance.
That what Catholics and other Christians who may claim that Mary was a perpetual virgin believe. They believe that Joseph was a old man when they married and that Mary's other children were her step-children from Joseph's first and deceased wife. The Bible is completely silent on that. And yet it does say that "Joseph did not have relations with Mary until Jesus was born." So I do not believe that she remained a virgin her whole life. The truth is - we don't know how old either one of them were except to surmise that she was fairly young and we have no factual evidence of when Joseph died nor how.

As good a cause of death as any I suppose.
